WHAT THE F***!!

Postby Jayincy » Tue Jun 28, 2016 7:33 pm

So my adviser called me this morning to inform me that I am not allowed to work in a hotel as a receptionist not even as an intern.
Apparently all the white-collar jobs are reserved for EU citizen only. And that I can only work as delivery boy or clean houses. :x :x :x

I feel the love Cyprus. I feel it.

But who cares anyway...

As if I would get treated like royalty if I were to try my luck in *your* country!

And I can say that with relative safety without even knowing your country of origin because I’ve had my fair share of traveling so I’ve seen how foreigners are treated in *all* countries.

You know, people come to this “little island of a dozen problems” thinking they’re gonna find Los Vegas or something where the jobs are aplenty and the pay generous!

But if you want BIG you should move to a BIG country like I did when I was young… try Canada, the US, Australia, etc, but don’t come to a little island expecting miracles.

I am not looking for something BIG as if unpaid internship is too much to ask.
I guess I am just a little frustrated and bitter with how limited a Non-EU citizen can do here.
As if like they want to kicked out all of us but without saying it directly to our face. But I get it you know
Cyprus is a small island but that shouldn't be a valid excuse to be a little unfriendly to foreigners like me.

So what are my chances of getting white collar work in Manila, given that I don’t speak Filipino and am a Mediterranean looking foreigner?

Well if you have the right qualifications then you will be treated like a human being. I get a vibe that you are well traveled, lots of work experience, and well educated. If you apply for a job right now in Manila, chances are high that you will be hired on the spot. Hell, they might even give you special treatment.

But how on Earth am I going to answer the company phone if a good percentage of those calls are in Filipino?

Is it not a liability?

If we are talking about being a receptionist here, then you have nothing to worry about. Most customer are foreigners. And majority speaks English.
Actually they give priority to candidates fluent in english because they speak english during customer interaction. This also applies to most white collar jobs.
