Best if Cyprus was returned to the Hellenic Nation to avoid refugees created in 1974.

What if ....

Postby GreekIslandGirl » Fri Oct 21, 2016 8:33 pm

Would you be happy to admit that Cyprus is a Greek island if it would have meant that 200,000 refugees would not have lost their homes and properties to the Turks?

For one, both Greece and Cyprus would not have had to join the EU (in such a hurry) in order to gain some protection against Turkey if Cyprus had (in 1960 or before) been returned to the Hellenic Nation.

Secondly, Turkey would have had no excuse to invade in 1964 and then again invade and succeed in 1974.

So, what would have been best?

To have been realigned with Greece and seen our island continue in complete and wholesome democratic freedom?

Or to supposedly have enjoyed the semi-independence Britain gave us that then led directly to Turkey taking nearly half our island?

(This is in General because we are talking hypothetical and historical possible outcomes ...)

Your thread is a good reminder that women are subservient by their very nature and thus unsuitable for any kind of leadership roles or important decision making.

...i remember the joy, as a young boy, being with my grandfather in the cafeniou he frequented, there on the wall, across from the table we sat at, three photos: Makarios, and on the other side of the Queen, Kucuk. We had running water now, and electricity, more than a road that passed through the village. Cyprus, meant something more than its "Greekness". Beyond that we were no longer the subjects of "others", as Cypriots our destiny was now in our hands. Even as a boy by age ten i had this vision, of my home, my village, the roots where people knew me as the son of someone, Turkish and Greek, the grandson of someone, from the family of someone.

...i remember the photos on my grandmother's kitchen walls, a man walking on the moon, a photo of the Queen as a young girl with her mother, a photo of Queen Victoria, on another wall, a photo of the Commonwealth as a group of Leaders where Makarios sits directly beside the Queen, above the small table, with a map of Cyprus beside it, a Church calendar above her stove. While our family was mostly displayed in the two other rooms; i like to think, her kitchen mattered most.

Cyprus; if things had stayed the way they were.

...what if the "Greeks" did not run away, what if they stayed like the other villagers who were Greek, but not "Greek"? What if they did fight "Turks", instead of what was not "Greek", what if as Cypriots they recognised that all Turks, in Cyprus, are not all, "Turks," defending them as Cypriots? And that whether they are "Greeks", or Greeks, whether "Turks" are our enemy or not, they too are themselves Cypriot?

What if they had realised by abandoning the rest of us, they would be betraying their very "Greekness"?

...indeed, something better happened than ENOSIS, (with (what is modern) Greece); worth fighting for.

Freedom for Cyprus, Liberty for Cypriots Turkish or Greek, (Maronite, Armenian, and Latin); for that while they may be equals as Cypriot Constituencies, as Cypriots they are equals, to Turks, and to Greeks.

...my fight continues, i do not forget. (but what do i know, my village being "mixed", and in affect, homeless now.)

That's what she probably had for lunch! :lol:

Use "kalamarou" or "galamarou" instead.

galamaras = masculine

galamarou = feminine

It's clear why some of you shouldn't be given the vote.

You seem to find it so easy to thoughtlessly allow 200,000 Cypriots to be turned into refugees and allow half of Cyprus to be taken up by Turks than admit what is right, historically, culturally and linguistically - that all would have been well if Cyprus was returned under the Hellenic fold.

It’s just as well Cyprus is a UN-member sovereign nation because had we gone by the longevity of foreign occupation, the Ottomans (307 years) would win hands down not Greece! (0 years)
