If you start listening to me more you can save a lot of time by stop wasting it on things I know you can't do ;) I suggest stop wasting your time with a browser very few will download and nearly nobody will use more than once, and instead invest it one something else with more potential for greater adoption... and maybe you could even make some pocket money this way!

Love the encouragement you give Sotos… I can always count on you lifting me up!

Alright… tell me. What should I get involved in?

If you want to get serious then step one is to be realistic with your current abilities and set realistic goals. I am not an expert in anything (I am more of a generalist than a specialist) but if you "get real" then I can help you with making something small that is the best or among the best for its specific function. And if that works out then maybe something a bit bigger etc.

If it’s small and easy I’ll probably finish it over a weekend and then have nothing to do and get bored and miserable. :?

The point is not just to do something, but to do something properly and make it the best or at least one of the best of its kind. Only in this case others will use it (and maybe pay for it, depending on what it does). Also, apart from doing you should also spend some time in some structured learning, e.g. spend the weekend doing a course.

What course are you on about… you think we’re in the Silicon Valley of California?

This is Cyprus and the only “skills” they’ve got here are Joomla, Wordpress and facebook!

I am not talking about a doctorate in computer science ;) I've met many clueless people that got some bachelor degree in a university and then they called themselves "web developer" because during their studies they took a course or two on some basic (and usually outdated) web related subjects.... but not all of them are like that. "This is Cyprus" is irrelevant when it comes to this kind of job because the market is global and totally open. Sure, you could make something specific for Cyprus and the competition will be less, but the market will be a lot smaller also... so not worth it usually. The courses I am talking about are for specific technologies. E.g. doing projects with Javascript and Nodejs is a good way to learn but it is much better if you combine it with some learning with courses and maybe books, so you will get the foundations right. Otherwise you run the risk of just copying and pasting code you don't really understand and you don't learn much this way.

... and I am talking about free courses and free books. Lots of good free material online, and I can also get access to paid material for free (and I am not talking about torrent downloads)

Well thank God because I’d hate to repeat that!

Do you really think it’s possible to write a full featured browser by copying and pasting other people’s miscellaneous bits and pieces of code? :?

That would mean that even you can write one... 8)

What can I say Sotos... you're a funny one! :)
