Skype

Postby marinosa » Sun Feb 26, 2006 11:05 pm

Recently it came to my attention that one of my customers was paying hundreds of pounds per month for talking to his daughter who is studying in England. I installed Skype for him and showed him how to use it to talk throught the internet which is free. For 15 CYP I can do the same for anyone who needs it. And if you need any speakers, microphones, headsets, internet phones etc. I can supply them.

Anybody can go to http://www.skype.com/ and get the program for free. Why should they pay you 15 pounds for that? If they are not savvy enough to install a program themselves then I don't think they will be savvy enough to find your post ;)

1 minute call to UK is 3.12 cents on normal rate and 2.88 on reduced. On average it's a 3 cents plus VAT equals 3.45 per minute. Let's assume that hundreds of pounds mean just 200 pounds. The we'll get 96 hours per month talking on that rate or about 3 hour and 15 minutes per day...

Hmm... Seems his daughter has nothing else to do in UK except talking to her father :) :) :)

But I guess that "hundreds of pounds" is a bullshit.

The point is that you can talk for 3 hours and 15 minutes per day without paying a cent. And I have customers who can use a web browser but they want me to show them how skype works. I'm addressing people like those the rest of you please ignore this.

And the rate for talking to a mobile phone in England with a connection registered in Cyprus is not 3.12 per minute.

Calling to a mobile means that you're calling a person who can be anywhere. Calling by Skype means that you calling a person sitting in front of PC. Usually persons sitting in pront of PC have a landline telephone and there is no need to call them on mobile.
So calling Skype to Skype (free of charge) is equal to call from landline to landline. If you're gong to call someone from Skyp to mobile then you have to use SkypeOut which is not free. And call to UK mobile via SkypeOut is 23.6 eurocents per minute (incl. VAT) which equals to 13.5 cyprus cents per minute. And CYTAs rate to UK mobile is 13.45 peak-hours and 12.35 off-peak hours (incl. VAT). So using SkypeOut for UK mobiles is more expensive then Cyta :)

And Cyta is not alone in the market, there are number of telephone providers with lower rates.
