Olives are from Cyprus?

Postby repulsewarrior » Thu Nov 09, 2017 2:24 am

...did I read this right; the origin of the (domestic) olive tree we know today is thanks to a Cypriot about 6,000 years ago?

...interesting.

It is indeed interesting: Cyprus was very much at the forefront of agricultural development from the earliest Neolithic times, and early use of olives would be a part of that though what I gather from the article is that while Olive cultivation in Cyprus is very ancient, the genetic story is confusing and further further research is needed, to cofirm where olive cultivation was initiated here or in EG the Levant. Strikingly, techniques such as grafting were in use 4000 years ago.
