Grandparents are Cypriot - Can I get a citizenship?

Postby mzozo » Sun Dec 10, 2017 12:28 pm

Hello,

I've been trying to understand the rules around obtaining a Cypriot citizenship but many rules apply to my parents and not grandparents.

All 4 of my grandparents were born in Cyprus. They all however moved over to the United Kingdom in the 50s, so both my parents were born/live in the UK and speak fluent Greek. I am 23, female, was also born in the UK and have a Cypriot surname. From what I understand, my parents should be able to get a Cypriot citizenship should they want to, but at the moment they do not have one.

If I wanted to become a Cypriot citizen, is this dependent on my parents first becoming Cypriot citizens? Do I qualify for a citizenship even if they are not Cypriot citizens?

Thanks.

You will get your citizenship from your parents. So they firstly need to apply to be citizens.

If your father is under 50 years old however he may be subject to military service should he come to Cyprus at any time!!

Good Luck.

Hey @mzozo as @b25 stated above your parents need to be citizens in order to apply. You can checkout the Cypriot government website for the exact details of the criteria you need to provide or your parents would need to provide.

For me it was difficult because my parents weren’t married. My father had to swear that I was his legit child at a Cypriot court even though my birth certificate says I’m his child. I also had to provide a lot of documents to prove that I was legit and that my parents were legit and these had to be apostiled (this was the most expensive part).

Your parents would need to do all this and then you would have to do it. I can imagine if your parents are happy with their status they probably wouldn’t bother.
