How much discount did you get for a new car in Cyprus?

Postby Sotos » Sat Apr 21, 2018 1:33 pm

I am planning to buy a car in the "B-Class" category (Ford Fiesta, VW Polo, Seat Ibiza, Mazda 2, Kia Rio etc) and I am trying to understand how much discount is a good discount. A few years ago I was offered about 12% for an Audi A3 and more recently for a small city car I got a quote with 9% discount. But yesterday some dealership had the audacity to offer me just 3.5% discount!! Are they trying to play games with me so they can later offer 6% and pretend that they made me the best price ever? If you bought a new car in Cyprus, how much discount did you get for it?

The selling price is not secret, it hangs on the windshield and there's also a leaflet with an itemized list of all the extras.
Assuming they won't trade in your old car, and they won't arrange you a loan, the maximum discount is 500 Euros and they might offer you free 3rd party insurance for 1 year.
My daughter bought a Mazda 2, 1.6 petrol automatic, last year, after checking with all other makes, basically every agency offers about the same discount.
There are a few extras they might give you for free e.g original floor mats.

I suspect everybody cheats on the reported fuel consumption though. This Mazda 2 consumes 30% more compared to it's specs.
Unfortunately 99% of the people don't know how to check it though, so you can't rely on anyone. Get prepared for a surprise on this issue.

NB. My neighbor bought a Skoda and when I asked him he said: Oh it's very economical, I fill it up only once a month. :o
Go figure... He doesn't even know what fuel consumption means.

As I wrote I got a 12% discount (€3650) on an Audi a few years ago and a few weeks ago a 9% (€1000) quoted discount for a small car. And I am referring to those two cases because I had shown serious interest (doing test drives etc). I got several more quotes over the years by just looking at a car and asking "what is the best price you can do" and I was always getting more than €500 discounts without even trying to negotiate. So €500 is certainly not the maximum, but more like the bare minimum. I'd say you should be able to get at least €1000 from any car, and a lot more for more expensive cars, especially when you add a lot of extra features.

What is quoted is based on ideal conditions. In the real world you will never get anywhere close to that and it could be much worst depending on how and where you drive. But those numbers are a good indication because that 30% in your case would be added to all cars.

Milti is allowed a tax-free car if purchased during the first 2 years of his arrival.

He can buy it with your money in his name and then transfer it over to you as a gift! :)

And upon transferring it over you’ll have to pay the tax due! :?

Sorry, it took a while to recall the rest of the rules…

Tseriotis & Pilakoutas offer high discounts because they know they will get much more out off you through service and parts.

Maybe it's because Pilakoutas knows that if he buys a Ford, Seat or Kia it’ll be falling apart regularly. :?

Stick to Honda, Toyota or Nissan… Sotos.

The cars I am looking at have long warranties so that shouldn't be an issue.
