Army question

Postby Alfa1750 » Tue Sep 25, 2018 9:51 am

We would love to move to Cyprus, my wife and I were born in UK (My parents were born in Cyprus now deceased but had British passports and lived in UK)
We have 2 boys 14 and 11 year old, as far as I can see they have to serve 14 months in the Cyprus Military is that correct or am i missing something, thanks in advance!

If your parents were officially British, you are British and your children are British, then they will not need to serve (unless you get the Cyprus Citizenship)

If you remain a British resident, you can have Cyprus citizenship without doing CNG training.

This doesn't make sense, if you get Cypriot citizenship, this is what dictates the army, how can you not remain a British citizen anyway?? Burning your passport??

It's residency which dictates whether you do the CNG training or not. You can be a Cypriot citizen, claimed by birth etc, but not be resident in Cyprus in which case you don't have to do it. I think you are allowed to stay even a few months at a time and not have to do it. You can apply for a permanent exit waiver permit thing. I only know this from others, we haven't done this (nor intend to) so haven't put it to the test.

Residency in the UK is also not dictated by only having a British passport. I know Brits who have fled the UK, are resident abroad, but still retain their British passport.
