Hi All,

Im very curious to understand the origin of my surname.

As far as I'm aware we are the only Cypriot family with this surname.

From what I have been told, Koizi is a derivation from Loizi (Louizos) - but how does this come about?

I know that my great grandparents where from Singrasi and Arnathi north of famagusta.

If anyone has any input/knowledge on how this name came about I'd be thankful.

I also thought my surname was unique but it wasn't.

Some Cypriot surnames are actually nicknames that stuck.

My father and his brother have different surnames - one was registered with my grandfathers surname, the other was registered with the nickname as the surname.

I am also interested to know how or why the authorities of the time accepted it like this.

I suspect it’s the nickname of someone (during British rule) who was rather easygoing and lazy, so they took the English “Go easy” to construct “o Koizis”!

It depends how it was originally pronounced. Was it with double K?

it could also come from bulgaria - koiz is quiz bulgaria and typical gc they add an i at the end of it.
