The US proxies have won a battle in one small area that just happened to be the last bit of The Caliphate, there are still in the region of 20 to 30,000 of them around and they are in several countries. So it is a bit presumptuous to suggest they are defeated. The ISIS leaders have also disappeared.

Trump could have dropped one M0AB on that small area and achieved the same result.

I think the triumphalism's over the fact that ISIS once totally dominated a huge area containing an estimated 2-8 million people but that's all gone now. It's an ex-caliphate. A dead territorial parrot. They've also lost something like 13,000 fighters. I don't think GR's been one of them though.

It appears to me that most seem to be acknowledging the reality - that the organisation and its affiliates haven't "gone away" but will simply go back to terrorism.

I suppose it's a paradox for any terrorist group. The more successful they are the bigger a target they become.

taliban was created to expel the russians from afghanistan but of course the americans did not realise what taliban would do once in power.

isis was also started by the americans and israel under what they called free syrian army to expell assad from syria and grab all the resources there and now they can claim they defeated it.
