Sukhoi Superjet-100

Firstly condolences to the family and friends of the (so far as is known) 13 dead from the tragic incident at Sheremetyvo a few hours ago.

Do our resident aviation experts have any thoughts on what went wrong?

My own limited understanding is that the plane took off, had an issue, returned, in the process doing a complete loop round, than one video shows the plane coming in quite fast, doing a high bounce, smacking down hard then there is a flash and the fire develops...

The fact that the plane made a quick turnaround back to the airport to make an emergency landing, there had to be something critical wrong with the aircraft. As for the high speed landing, due to extra weight from unused fuel would required the aircraft to come in “hot” even if the flaps were deployed. If the flaps were not deployed due to hydraulic problem, then the aircraft would have come in even “hotter” to land, which often can cause a very hard landing.

From the video where it starts about half way down the runway after landing, the back of the aircraft is engulfed in flames. Was the flames already there before the landing or was it there after the landing? This is important information to know as to how the fire started. If the fire started from heavy landing where the landing gear struts punched a hole into the full fuel tank or was the engine(s) already on fire before it landed, made worse by possible fuel leak. Too early to know for sure what has happed until more information comes out from the authorities.

One report (RT) was that there was a flash reported shortly after it left the ground as if it was struck by lightning and speculation it took out all the electronic systems even the radios? The Captain has said he had no proper communication with the ground ..... it was intermittent.

Looking at the video of the landing!!!!! In a light aircraft if you 'bounce' you add power to stop it sinking, this guy must have been having difficulties with the controls? He was landing it manually. It bounced went nose up, nose down, then nose up and bumped the tail ...... and then the fuel fire started. A sad tragedy .... although I suppose it could have been even worse?

We will just have to wait and see what sequence of events caused it.

I'm not going to speculate about anything as I will defer to the investigation.

But, I will say this. this is an example of how stupid Russians are. They are stupid and self centred.

As the passengers evacuated, the were getting their carry on. How dumb can you get?

13 people dead, so way to go stupid Russians. I guess the Russians can't afford new sovraka!

There is no bigger expert than Captain Roger Victor.

Have you never been on an aircraft full of Cypriots? Exactly the same mentality .....they are no different.

SOME .... in fact one in particular .... in 10C ..... a grossly overweight individual prevented those behind him from exiting whilst he got his overhead luggage out. We don't know his nationality .... he might have been Cypriot? But the authorities took him away.

Except you of course?

Yes well that it hat Captain Roger Victor said.

I’m still at 13 as I was in an overnight last night, and had an early start this morning and a long duty.

I really haven’t seen anything about the crash and won’t speculated even if I had.

41 dead but a lot of carry on was saved. Hooray.

That was very poor discipline by the cabin crew and incredibly poor form of the passengers that placed more value on their carry on than other human lives. This cost lives at the end of the day.
