What if someone invades or has invaded, ethnically cleanses the land, steals property, commits other crimes, occupies it for decades and continues to make threats and is a protagonist?

Were you referring just to Turkey? Because they are not alone in doing that ..... and Cyprus is BFF with the other protagonist!

Oh I think you do! They frequently scream across the sky over Limassol to practice with the RoC National Guard but here's a clue if you still don't know:

'Stray Syrian anti-aircraft missile' hits northern Cyprus

"The first assessment is that a Russian-made missile... which was part of the air defence system that took place last night in the face of an air strike against Syria, completed its range and fell into our country after it missed," Mr Ozersay wrote in a post on Facebook.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, reported that the Israeli warplanes had targeted bases linked with Iranian and Iran-backed forces supporting the Syrian government in the country's eight-year civil war.

It said the missiles had hit a research centre and a military airport in the Homs area used by Iranian personnel and fighters from Lebanon's Hezbollah movement.

Good for the BBC at least they mentioned the Israel connection .............. :)

One day the Syrians will get lucky and Israel will then blame Syria! The Israeli’s fly out of Israel over the sea and then release their missiles over Lebanon so Syria can only fire at them over the sea. The probability is that one of the missiles is eventually going to hit Cyprus. Imagine the consequences if this fell in the South and in a populated area!

In that event Who would be to blame ....... Syria acting in self defence or Israel as the aggressor?

it would be Israel acting as the aggressor. as far as those two are concerned.

But the solution for Cyprus is something else and that could be bringing the s300's back from Crete.

So we come full circle and whatever other nations do around Cyprus has much, much less potential consequences for her.

that helps prove my point,

Just keeping it simple really.

RH alert. Good luck with that one.

If we’re still talking about Cyprus. :?

You were trying but won’t get an argument from me. I’m entirely on your side.

I just don’t believe a resolution to your situation lies in the military sphere and I think whatever shade of government you have will appreciate that. Procuring/deploying sophisticated, long range weapons in particular would probably have the complete opposite effect to that intended, to increase security.

Do you really think the S300s would make the ROC safer? :?

Erm, yes I do think the s300 would make Cyprus safer.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where arms are required to counter balance those that have arms and bad intentions.

What is the alternative? No arms, let the aggressor stroll in then with nowhere else to go, we run around the fields getting shot at like rabbits?

Or live under tyranny and oppression?

I for one am looking forward to the next joint exercises with the IAF and IDF.

The strategic importance of this alliance is immense and far outweighs any possibility of a stray S200 hitting Cyprus.

The Israelis will take care of business anyway and its not as if the Syrians are a big threat. They basically always shoot down Russian aircraft anyway so its a win win really! :D

The way things are going, the USA could gift a number of Patriot Missile Defence Systems to Cyprus anyway.

They just gifted 70 Helicopters to Greece (Bell 212 ASW). 40 to fly and the other 30 to be cannibalized for spares. :D

I think the USA might use Cyprus to send Turkey a message.

Don't be surprised if Cyprus gets the Patriot.

I admit I slightly strayed off the thread, but I find it ironic that in Cyprus we recognise the aggression of Turkey and the aftermath of 1974 but are quite content to be 'best friends' with another country doing exactly the same thing Turkey did to this island but to another people. :?

I don't agree that bringing the S-300's back from Crete would be a solution! As Turkey is the only military threat to Cyprus that would just be a provocation and in all reality if the RoC National Guard confronted the Turks again ...... the GC's will lose the rest of the Island and they will get the same support they got in 1974 ..... zilch, nothing but hot air and sympathy!

IMO: We should be standing shoulder to shoulder with the Palestinians against the land theft and continuous aggression from Israel. We should be recognise the the pain of the Palestinian people as we expect others to recognise the pain that GC's feel. But the Palestinians pain started 26 years before 1974 and, unlike the GC's in 74, has gone on up to this day ........ continuously! :x :x
