Question over question

Postby icetea » Mon Jan 23, 2006 5:29 pm

Hi everybody!

I am already thinking for years to move away from Austria. Not that I don't like my country but ... the weather ...

Now, finally, I choosed to move to Cyprus. From the second February I will be there for a week to check up some things before actually moving there a couple of weeks later.

I read a lot of posts in this forum and I like it very much. Some topics are very interesting, some are very funny ...

But I have some questions for which I couldn't find the answer till now. I hope that you can give me some informative answers.

1. When moving to Cyprus, you have to register at the foreign police office. Do you need to show them the checking out paper from the place where you were living before or is it possible to be still checked in there for a couple of months?

2. I saw many renting offers from agencies over the internet, but does anyone know, how much in general the deposit costs are, and how much the agencies are asking for? To find an appartment for rent privat, where would be the best place to look for?

3. For which jobs they look mostly there? Does anyone know the average salaries for accountants? In many job offers i read that you need good knowledge of greek. Is this really necessary? How are better jobs in the touristic branche paid and do you need there greek knowledge?

4. I read a couple of posts about moving the staff to Cyprus. I guess the best solution is a container, but can anyone tell me how much it costs or which firmas offer this?

I know, pretty many questions... But you could help me really a lot by answering me as much as possible.

Well, it depends on profession. I believe you are an accountant (Chartered / Ceritified) ? If yes, you have more prospects in Nicosia/Limassol rather than the other towns for the obvious reasons. For rent, they usually ask for a month's or two-months' rent in advance. Accountants can fairly get a job easily here. As for the rest of your qs, I cannot answer them.

I guess you have been to the island a couple of times....
Well, I always rented from private and no deposit was needed. If you know a few people, ask them if they know of any places for long-term rent.

In the tourist industry (airport, travel agencies, tour operators) you will do ok without Greek, although a little knowledge could do no harm :-)

'Hull Blyth Araouzos' is a company that does this kind of business.

Hi icetea

You did not say what Nationality you are; the Immigration procedures could be very different if you do not have a 'right' to live in Cyprus eg Cypriot, EU National etc). To get a decent job as an Accountant, you will need Greek, almost certainly. Salaries here are notoriously low; I would guess a qualified Accountant would earn around £12-1500 pm - but others might correct me on that.

Please research before taking major decisions :-)

Agents do not charge you for finding a rental, they cahreg the rentee, normall one month's rent.

Hi everyone!

Thanks for the information. Now I start getting very curious about Cyprus as from the second February I will be there for a week.
:D

Svetlana, my nationality is Austrian, so with living there I don't have problems concerning the papers. It would be just interesting to know, if everyone who moved there, moved officialy out from his country as well or if they had two places of residence for a while until they settled really down.

Hi icetea

As an EU national you will be entitled to stay here for 3 months without a visa; for a longer stay you will need to go to Immigration and prove that you have sufficient income to sustain you here - and private medical insurance. (They will require Bank statements, eveidence of income etc).
Obviously this is so much easier if you have obtained employment in Cyprus because you will be able to prove income and, as you will be paying Social Insurance contributions, you will not have to have private medical insurance.
