I’ve seen this before. We use to make traps - bucket of water, a ramp up to the bucket, a beer round some wire and peanut butter on the beer can. The mice will go up the ramp and on to the beer can to get the treat, which would swivel and they lose their footing into the bucket of water. In the morning, we would see how many we got.

How interesting, I did not read the book but I did see the film and it was Jacko that sung it in the film too as well as releasing it. Now that you said it, it does sound like Donny song. Jacko sang it so much better though.
