We don’t have the infrastructure for electric cars in CY, so what kind of gimmick-subsidy is this?

If it wasn't because of the LHS steering wheel, I wouldn't think twice about taking my EV to Cyprus. Range is 420 km, battery capacity 72kWh which could easily be loaded at home every night. I really don't see the problem

I have no idea mate… I haven’t even seen an electric car on the roads here in CY! So can you plug it into your mains at home or did you have to get some kind of transformer first?

Well, it is possible to charge it from the mains, but not recommended.

What I did at home was to set aside a separate 32A circuit and install a dedicated charging unit outside (total cost 1000€). This unit can be controlled via the app. For this kind of AC charging the car will accept up to 7kW (which means it could be fully charged from 8PM to 6AM (such a need is never there for me, though). I was a bit skeptical at first, but realizing it takes 1 minute to hook/unhook twice a week, I found out I use less time at this, then at gaz stations. Where I live prices will vary throughout the day/night: a mobile app will somehow optimize/lower your costs. That is still not the case for Cyprus presumably.

Of course, if you charge from the mains, charging time would triple.

Received my bill from EAC yesterday. Huh... does it make sense that the marginal price for 1 kWh is more or less 25 cents in Cyprus?
If so, my energy costs would be 5€ for 100 km, not bad for a vehicle of 2,1 tonne (the smaller ones run much more efficiently).

TOM's latest reply this morning...

Right... so the magic word here is "plug-in hybrid" which (after a little research) start from 40 thousand and go up to 100!

I guess I was fooled into thinking that our government had a genuine concern for the environment and genuinely wanted to get rid of old bangers, when those that own the old bangers (some 80% of the population) would never fork out such amounts for a new car! <---

Toyota just responded...

Thank you very much for your email and interest in the Toyota Yaris

The specific model is not covered by the Government scheme since the CO2 emissions are much higher than the minimum requirements

The only model we have in that category is the Toyota Rav4 Plug in Hybrid

So there you have it people... our government is obviously not targeting the lower to middle classes who own the old bangers that need to be removed from the streets.... in fact I have no idea who they are targeting because lawyers and doctors don't have old bangers needing to be scrapped! :?

You'd have to add the cost of replacing the batteries every few years.
Did you change them so far? What was the cost?

An acquaintance bought one of these. without any subsidy. Great car, but over priced imo. When I asked her about the cost of replacing the batteries she said she doesn't know and doesn't care anyway.
There are people in Cyprus who make tons of money without even working...

I bought it this year. It came with a guarantee (loss should not exceed 20% after 8 years). Other high-end cars (like Tesla, mine is another brand) that been around for that amount of time isn't bothered with too much loss, and it is expected that the quality has improved since then.

Oops sorry, I thought yours was a hybrid. Regardless there must be something more than the "8 years" term accompanying your guarantee, as the lifetime of these batteries depends on the number of charges/discharges. E.g. A mobile phone uses similar batteries. If you consume your battery during the day (many people do) and charge it every night, it won't last more than 4-5 years.

Use horse and cart for local transport and use public transport for city to city. It is the only thing that will save the world. You also need to cut travel, use IT to maximum for your needs.
