Australian woman angry at the floods

Postby Lordo » Sat Mar 12, 2022 6:59 pm

This Australian woman is very angry at the floods that occured. According to her, they had what they described as once in a hundred years flooding 10 years ago and now they have had another.

I got news for you love. You build your house in a flood plane and it will flood again and again. A friend of mine tells me that some of this area are actually below sea level so the water can't even escape to the sea even if it wanted too.

But judging by the Australian presence in this forum, I am not surprised at their stupidity. Even stonage man understood the flood plane and built abouve it sometimes building their homes on stilts.

You cannot be angy at nature, it was there long before you and it will be there long after you are dead and gone.

I was there in Jan/Feb 2020. We travelled to Sydney on a train through mile after mile of totally burned out countryside. We spent a few days there then went off on a NZ cruise for 2 weeks. On our return Sydney was being blitzed by "record" flooding.

Right now it looks like both Sydney and Brisbane are being hit really hard. I wonder how Paphitis and family are faring.

I'm not anywhere near Brisbane or Sydney anymore. It is true that I am now living in the USA on an E3 Visa - a very specific VISA that is only open to Australians and Canadians.

I was based in Sydney between June of 2017 till July 2018, and in Brisbane from August 2018 until October 2021. Enjoyed my time in both Sydney and Brisbane. Whilst in Brisbane, lived in a suburb called New Farm, right on the Brisbane River, which was very nice. Brisbane River is very tidal but I never experienced any flood.

The biggest Ammagedon event I saw with my own eyes and actually had close proximity to, were the massive bushfires in the eastern parts of Australia, near Sydney, to the south of Brisbane, and around Canberra.

And also the Townsville floods when I fley into Townsville as one of the first aircraft that was able to land there. It was around midnight when I got to Townnsville and the only glimpse I saw of the massive floods was when I became visual off the ILS at about 330 feet. The only thing I saw was the runway. And I departed for Brisbane less than an hour afterwards.

The passengers on board were State Emergency Services/Responders and I was on charter. The 2 planes that came in before me were RAAF Galaxy.

With the bushfires, we would depart from Brisbane in blue skies and just south there would be a blanket of smoke from there, all the way to Canberra, all along the East Coast and interior. Canberra and Sydney were worst hit. and at times you would enter this massive layer of smoke caught under an inversion layer. Turbulent as all hell, and you wouldn't get out of it till 300 feet off the ILS.

But back to Brisbane and Sydney. They are very nice places to live in.

The biggest trial I have endured recently was getting COVID. 3 people in my family got it and we are still isolating at this point till 2359 Wednesday.

As it turns out, the biggest trial has been the inconveniance of isolating from the world. that is a pretty hard. But the 3 of us have had either no or very minor symptoms. I was the luckiest out of the 3 as I was completely without any symptoms at all. The only thing is I felt very tired for a period of 24 to 48 hours. It was an unusual type of tiredness that I never experienced before. Even after plenty of sleep.

My wife had slightly more synmptoms, but nothing at all serious. Just a blocked nose and croaky throat. Daughter had virtually no symptoms other than some lethargy and maybe a croaky throat for about 24 hours.

Our Son has so far managed to dodge it. But he is no longer living with us at this point, and is in the care of other family - my wife's uncle and their family. We have not seen him since becomming positive.

Right now though, all 3 of us are fine. Daughter being the first, is out of isolation and can go to school. Myself and my wife, still isolated.

I am back at work this Friday. I am not allowed any PCR tests or Rapid tests neither as they will be positive for the next 6 to 8 weeks. I am probably not infectious anymore, but who knows really.

My entire roster for work has changed. But good news is, I am still with my assigned line trainer. The second one I have had so far after my initial LA assignment. Get along with him real well.

From my assessment of the Covid situation in the states. it's seems apparent to me that they are going for herd immunity now. Probably always have from early on. It's been so rampant, that they are almost there now, with pretty much half the population having had COVID so far.

Brisbane is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Make that one of the best places to live in the world.

It's not under sea level. It's not on a flood plane either. Brisbane is actially a very Hilly city with a lot of up and down in certain spots. But the Brisbane River runs down the guts and this is a massive tidal river. You can't swim in it. You'll get eaten by a Bull Shark. It is navigateable by Cruise Liners and even US Aircraft Carriers up to the suburb of Hamilton where the Navy and Cruise Liners dock. It's very beautiful there with lovely markets as well. One of the best things about Brisbane is the US Navy visits regularly after holding exercises, and every year a massive Aircraft Carrier is seen at Fisherman's Wharf, the USS Ronald Reagan no less, and when you see that thing come in under full ceremonial colours and flying the Ausstralian Flag and with all it's sailors in full ceremonial dress, it really is a jaw dropping and hair raising experience.

The main Harbour is at Fishermans Wharf right under the approach of Runway 01L. The reason why Brisbane was built where it is, is because it has an excellent natural Harbour - one of Australia's busiest. Brisbane Airport is very busy as well and a gateway to Australia with 25 million passenger movements, Australia's third busiest.

It's subtropical. Not Mediterranean, like Perth, Adelaide, or melbourne. So it rains a lot. And when it rains it rains. Not uncommon to get 10 inches in a day. Added to that are the massive damn on the outskirts. In the last floods, they filled to 100% so they had to open the damns, and release the water so the damns would not break. Add the rain, and you will get mass flooding.

Where I lived was right on the Brisbane River. this area does flood. But its also one of the most beautiful spots and very exclusive as well due to its proximity to the city. Out the front of my apartment was the New farm Ferry Station. and you could walk along the river along the boardwalk, to the Bridge and then city.

The nick name of Brisbane is Brisvegas, because of its massive skyline and it's impressive night lights.

Suburbs like Newstead and West End are very arty too and eclectic. Get Real would be appallled because of the number of Gay people around, and alternative hipsters but it is a fun place with great bars and clubs and interesting people. I think drab Moscow is more his thing. Da!

Brisbane is a lovely place. Only downside is, no good beaches, but when you drive for an hour to south, you arrive in a place called Gold Coast and then Coolangatta. Best beaches in the world. This is the text book definition of Australia. Beach, Surf, Fish and Chips. And Gold Coast is most certainly one of the best places in the world. If you drive for an hour north, you arrive to the Sunshine Coast, and Daintree Rain Forrest. Also Maroochydore and Noosa. Again, best beaches ever, best surf and amazing places.

Brisbane has great infrastructure. The highway network is amazing. You are able to do 100km/hr and so close to the city thanks to this systeem of Highways, that as far as I am concerned kills Germany. There is a massive underground highway system as well, than spans the entire length of the city - you need to pay a toll to use it which is automatic as we have sensors on our windscreen. It's a big city with a lot of urban sprawl. It takes 2 hours to drive from the southern extremity to the out northern extremiity. It's a big city.

The skyline looks like Las Vegas or Dubai. Hence the name of Brisvegas. People are awesome as well.

Can't go wrong with Brisbane.

So the lady is wrong whoever she is. Brisbane's location was specifically chosen for its excellent harbour.
