Construction collapse.

Postby Lordo » Sun Oct 23, 2022 10:03 pm

This sort of thing happens when the construction is controlled by a company who intends to maximise profit. Corners are cut, steel used is reduced, strength of concrete is reduced and all in the name of maximising profit.

Looking at the piece on the floor, it is beyond belief that companies are allowed to do this.

At the time I was building my house they had a shortage of sand, and some crooks were using sand from the sea!! I demanded that all building materials for the concrete were brought and mixed up on site, and I was checking everything daily. It costed more than ready mixed concrete delivered via Putzmeister machines , but I had no other choice. :|

It is the only way, otherwise you have no control over the quality of the sand. It has to come from a river bed of some sort or sandy soil mined. Sea sand is just asking for trouble.

Actually all the river bed sand has been exhausted in Cyprus, and that was our only source.
Today they just make sand by crashing the gravel completely. It's a bit more coarse but it contains the ingredients to make concrete. Gone are the days, we were playing as kids jumping from the roof of unfinished houses, onto a pile of real sand, which was soft and smoothy. 8)

I guess we are back to mud made from clay and crushed straw like the old days then with mud brick and cut stone.

...mud, still the best form of construction for housing.

Consider the Swiss Chalet made of timber frame, and mud and hay to fill between them; a crepi to keep it free from the elements: maintained last hundreds of years.

...given our engineering skills as a civilization, we have only begun to make skyscrapers out of wood; both steel and concrete have large environmental footprints.
