cypriot way of cooking?

Postby icetea » Sat Feb 04, 2006 12:26 pm

Finally I made it to come to Cyprus. I stay in a 3star hotel on half board. My first dinner there was disappointing me already a lot. Chicken soup, which was not salted, salad, which didn't taste, and the main menu was just disgusting. It was Wiener Schnitzel with rice, pommes frittes and some kind of beans. But everything was without a taste. It was cooked without any spices.
The next day I met the woman from the travel agency and she told me that this is normally in Cyprus to cook without salt and other spices.
I can't believe this as I thought that the kitchen is similar to the greek one. What do you say about that?

Get out of that hotel and hit one of the local tavernas. You will always get good and bad food no mater what country you go to.My rule of thumb is ,look for a restaurant where locals are dinning.Always a good indicator that the food is better

hi icetea, and welcome to cyprus and forum!

pomm frites und schnitzel??!!

are you sure you are in cyprus ? or is it that german restaurant in limassol

a tip, to get a taste of many things.... find a restaurant that offers meze / mezedes.
you can order fish meze or meat meze, to be honest you should try both on different days. and dont fall in the trap of eating too much bread in the beggining... i already miss home

waiting for you next experience.

Wiener schnitzel?????????????? This is a veal dish and, in many years here, I've never once seen veal in butchers' shops or in restaurants. Something VERY fishy there. Mind you, many Cypriots substitute pork for any other meat in dishes, because it's cheaper. For example, souvlakia, moussaka and pastitsia should traditionally be made with lamb but most of what you see in restaurants today is pork.

Hi icetea,

As cov has already said, get out of the hotel and find yourself a decent taverna.

Avoid eating in the tourist areas - the majority of tavernas serve a pretty strange concoction of Cypriot and non-Cypriot food.

If you want proper Cypriot food, get out of the tourist areas and make your way to the villages and eat where the Cypriots eat.

That woman was talking through an oriface that's normally reserved for another purpose.

It is very similar to Greek in that respect. We put about as much spicies as they put in Greece which is nowhere close to the amount of spices that the Asians put.
