Miltiades

Postby Tim Drayton » Fri Oct 06, 2023 7:36 am

As some here may know, Miltiades who was once a regular on this forum has been battling with cancer for the past few years. Sadly, the doctors have said he is now in his final days. He came out of hospital last Friday and is at least at home in his own bed surrounded by loving family members who are giving him amazingly good care round the clock. I call round every day. He was unconscious when I went yesterday evening but looked comfortable and at peace. I was able to exchange a few words with him the day before yesterday. I am afraid that may have been our last ever chat.

How sad ....... but although death is inevitable it is always difficult when that day comes, :(

I met Milti once and liked him, we had a good chat.

Hi Tim,
That is a very sad news indeed. Milti and I joined the CF at about the same time and we also met twice in London awhile back. We had much respect for each other. As a cancer survivor myself, I had high hopes for his recovery. I will miss him and his witty humour in his posts. He will be long remembered.

Thank-You Tim.

...good to hear from you, despite the bad news.

Tell him, if you get the chance to, that we care.

It is my onerous task to report that Miltiades passed away at a little after 8.30 Cyprus time this morning. I was at his bedside about fifteen minutes before he departed. I told him about this thread and who had responded. His eyes were open at the time. It seems that people can retain the ability to hear and understand even when very ill, so there is a chance that he took it in. May he rest in peace.

Very sad news.

I also met Milti once. We sat and drank far too much - very good - wine under the stars at a taverna next to the jetty he used to fish at. He told me about his tragic childhood, the death of his Mother and how he ended up at an orphanage, which back then was just across the road from us. Also, of his time in the UK. Throughout, he was getting texts and video calls from a lovely East European lady. So very Milti. :)

RIP old friend.

At the risk of being irreverent, but I know he always had a great sense of humour and believed in laughing at himself, I'll post a link to the following old song that always used to bring him to my mind. Some may understand why. Most won't. My lips are sealed as to why.

I was in Cyprus in June and tried to contact Milti. I didn't receive a reply and guessed he was ill. I met him a couple of times at the Orams trial and later on when he stayed with his brother in Margate. He was a good man, I wish I had seen more of him over the years. Condolences to his family.

RIP Miltiades
