Car insurance in Cyprus .........

Postby Robin Hood » Tue Jan 30, 2024 10:09 am

Our neighbour has just received just two weeks notice ...... when her current car insurance expires ....... that they will not renew her insurance because she is now 80 years old! She has been with this company for almost 20 years and has never claimed. She has a clean driving license and, having driven with her several times, she is an excellent driver.

None of the insurance companies will take on a NEW motor insurance for anyone over 70! So her present company doing this based solely on her age, and illegally, has left her totally reliant of others for transport.

This is a breach of Article #21 of the the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights but apparently is common practice with many Cypriot Insurance companies and yet, even though this is ILLEGAL the authorities, including the police just shrug their shoulders ...... as usual. She could go to a Civil Rights Lawyer but anything to do with lawyers is a very slow process ............ and expensive.

She obviously wants a PDQ solution ................. ANY SUGGESTIONS? :?

Unfortunately, this seems quite common here. Although I can't figure out the rhyme nor reason. I know some people in their 80s who still get insurance from their long-term company. Others who've been dropped from the day.

There is a method of obtaining such insurance, although it's 3rd party only and, despite that, very expensive. There’s a process, which this explains:

If a person is denied auto insurance purely based on age where age discrimination is unlawful, can she still be prosecuted if she drove without insurance?

If I were her, I would test the authorities by driving without insurance.

She will get done. It is easier I suspect to get the insurance under another person and be the named driver subject to them not objecting a named driver over 80. Mind you in most insurance policies anybody can drive a car with the permission of the owner in a third party basis. Well at least that is how it used to be.

I don't think one situation cancels out the other. If they caught her she would be in trouble ...... and she is a very smart and honest lady. If she was done for driving without insurance ...... she would be denied insurance and probably get disqualified? Her chances of then later getting insurance would be zero.

I think she is doing it the right way by sticking to the law.

My comments were only if she is denied auto insurance in perpetuity because of age discrimination and she is only getting older!

To be honest, I think she is better off ordering deliveries and using taxis. In the long run in a year, when you consider, insurance, petrol, repairs etc. it may actually work out cheaper in a place like Cyprus.

When ever I am there, anybody who wishes to visit me, I offer to pay for their taxi, and I will normally drive them back.

It works for me.

Just had a phone call from the lady and she now has insurance through the method you described! Her premium is LESS than she paid last year to the company that turned her down! They lost a good customer.

It appears to be like a consortium of companies that share the risk. When she asked if she would have the same problem next birthday, she was told not to worry! The lady she spoke to said she had just cleared insurance under the scheme for a man aged 95 ....... so there is hope for us when we get old?

That’s excellent news. Particularly as I’d heard some horror stories about the cost.

As you’re in the lead by a few years you can let me know how it goes.

To reiterate though. I do know a couple of 80+ folk who haven’t experienced the problem. :?
