Running Costs of Diesel Cars

Postby bluephoenix » Wed Feb 08, 2006 1:22 pm

What are the running costs of diesel cars in Cyprus compared to petrol cars?
Please take into account all taxes, fuel prices, fuel consumption per km etc.

Is it cheaper to own a petrol car? I know that in the past it was but since new EU laws have been enforced in 2006 as well as the price increase of diesel this has changed.

Thanks.

It is diesel for sure. Nowadays you can find a 1.6 diesel engine on a family car, which drinks less fuel and is more powerful too. Onwers' experience.

It depends, the running costs of a small petrol car (Toyota Yaris) would be cheaper than a large diesel car, even comparing similar cars, a 2.0l petrol with a 2.0l diesel for example, would give you cheaper costs for the petrol, because of usually higher purchase costs, and usually more frequent services, a diesel only works out cheaper if you are doing a high mileage.

Nope Cabbie it depends on the technology of the diesel engine. I have a large family saloon with a nice new technology 1.6 turbo diesel on it, which has the approximate torque (meaning real-life power) of a 2.2 to 2.5 petrol engine. I get an average 5.9 - 6.0 l/km consumption. If I had purchased the 2.2-2.5 petrol, the buying price would be of course higher, plus I would get close to 10-12l/km as an average... You have to compare the likes of new common-rail tech diesel engine that cam into the market 2,3,4, years ago though.

It's a bit like asking, "who's the worst criminal, Jack the Ripper, or Mrs. Miggins the convicted heinz baked beans tin thief.

What you reckon? Diesel doesnt have some kind of lunar, equatorial power in Cyprus. It's cheaper across the globe, on account of the fact that all diesel cars are by nature cheaper than petrol, as diesel is a more fule efficient....fuel.

per litre, its also cheaper than normal petrol, although the quality of the stuff out here I am somewhat circumspect of. It's probably more healthy to run your motor on Zivania.

It's not that it is cheaper its that the diesel engine consumes less fuel that a petrol one. Leo it is 5.9 to 6.0 litres/km. In some countries, they have started adopting the biodiesel, which is a modification on the diesel engine to be able to run on vegetable oil as well, like the used corn oil from Mc Donalds.... :)

Shouldn t it be KM per liter? Like we have Miles per Gal?

My Mustang gets 14 mpg on a good day(lol) , which is 3 miles per liter if I got it correct. (keep in mind 1 US gal is 4 liters)
And there is NO comparison in acceleration between diesel and gasoline (petrol).

Nope Leo, this is how it is in Europe!!!! it consumers 5.9 -6.0 litres / each km of driving! Only the US and UK use the same miles per gallon rate nowadays... Leo, you have to compare the mustang with the BMW 540d... Still I love the petrol high power engines!
