Cheap cars/van

Postby *DeathStar* » Thu Feb 16, 2006 7:20 am

Hi guys,

got a bit of a trip on my hands.

im intending to DRIVE back to the u.k  :)

i want to do it well, but im on a budget.

first of all i need a car/van

Are vans cheaper to buy here?

Can someone reccomend a cheap van or car place that i will have enough room in to sling all my stuff into?

car budget ... £1000- £1500.

i know thats not much to play with on this island ... but its worth a go.

will there be any problems me importing the car i end up with into the u.k?

They are cheap to buy indeed, but.... Corsa can be tiring to drive, and Escort seats are not the best for comfort. The Escort is very reliable though especially if you get the none-turbo diesel one. Still I would prefer a french diesel engine, at that price they are the quiest engine and most comfy ride.

Now I saw which model ... here are some comments, Pulsar was sold as Sunny in the UK:
What's Good
Easy to drive. 13' 11" long by 5' 6" wide and from 990kg. Strong, long lasting 1,270cc 60bhp and 84bhp 1,597cc engines. (Grew to 1,392cc with 82bhp and 1,597cc with 94bhp in March 1989). ZX with fuel injected 1,809cc 125bhp from July 1989 to 1991. 1,681cc 55bhp diesel from 1986 to 1991. Can be cheap to run and home maintenance is possible with Haynes manual no 1378. Can last well if looked after.

Sunny (1986 to 1991)
What's Bad
Hideous styling. Uninvolving to drive. Thin sheet metal rusts quickly if paint is broken. Not built to last. High 7 point death rate from accidents in this model.
What to Watch Out For
Skimped or incompetent home maintenance. Rust (especially structural rust underneath). Oil smoke denoting either bore wear or worn valve stem seals. Suspension damage from kerbing by elderly owners (most likely with 1.6 litre power-steered cars). Likely to have been mini cabbed. Diesel almost certain to have been cabbed. Diesel needs regular timing belt changes.
