Unless you have 3 kids or have a medical certificate, then you will be forced to suffer the fate of militery slavery. Once I get called up, they will have to give me an interpretor as i done *cough* speak any greek.

Personally, I look forward to my battle of wits with them. I have a medical certificate my problem knees (though I will be tested by the army doctors), they won't put me in the kitchen due to skin problems (fungal infection and pseriasis), I also have a tendency to want to experiment with sleeping pills and laxatives in peoples food, I can't see how a non Greek speaking person will be much use in an office etc etc etc.

Militery is what stopped me moving to Cyprus years ago. I don't want to be called up, I don't want to do it so I will be a constant pain in the ass for them. If more people do that, perhaps they will review the callup process.

From what I understand, you have 2 years to settle in before you get your callup. Couple of things you should be aware of.

1) Keep your boarding card from when you came over, you will need it
2) Bring a recorded proof of residence in Australia. If you can prove that you have lived in Australia for the past 10 years, you do a shorter sentence

Hazza, Your stated attributes are unlikely to be a handicap in you becoming an officer; general material i'd say.

Malaka, dont worry about doing your national service, chances are you will only have to stand around a guard post doing nothing, i hope you can be trusted with a nice rifle, and lots of weapons training. dont shoot any turks or dozy british tourists.
Good luck .

Its sad isnt it when cypriots cannot even return to their own country without the fear of being forced into the army to carry out a sentence-oh sorry DUTY TO THEIR COUNTRY.
Personally i think the army is a complete waste of space time resources and money. It serves no purpose, it aggravates youngsters, and it wastes two years of our young lives.
It should be formed as is the British army, wehreby people can go into he army as a career. It would be much more effective then if and when the army was ever needed we would know that to deal with any problems first hand would be a strong contingent of trained professionals dedicated to what they are doing. NOT a group of 18 year old scared kids straight out of school with only a minimal training background of two years military service.
Perhaps the army serves as a permanent reminder of the brainwash most of us endured at school when we were told that the turks are bad cypriots are good. Perhaps the army serves as a continuation of this brainwash from school into adult life for our youngsters, so when they get released into cypriot society, they too hold the same opinion of their forefathers about turkey which will in the future lead to another government of cyprus and cypriot people who have a misinformed opinion of the political situation, meaning the problem will never get solved.
Not being funny, but i would rather stick my feet into a bucket of acid, then dance on hot coals before i don an army cap and gun for the army here. Anyone else feel the same?

I agree with the "waste of time" aspect of the army, anybody with 2 brain cells must realise that if the Turkish army decided to march South they'd go through our conscripts like shit through a duck.
One of my best friends is a repatriated English Cypriot who served 6 months in the army, during that time he fired the grand total of 24 bullets and swore never to play tavlin again... Sums up the training I think.

Well if thats what you do in Australia then youd have fun in the army here. The normal term for army service is 26 months. Every year, you read up in the papers and on the news of serious accidents happening during training sessions around the island. 100% of the time they are all caused by the soldiers themselves, the most recent was live ammunition was used instead of blanks. Other accidents included loss of control of tanks going off side of bridges etc.. THERE IS NO STRUCUTRE PROFFESIONAL TRAINING OR GUIDELINES.
If the turks ever decided to invade again, they would rip through the front lines of our tropps and leave them for dust.
NATIONAL GUARD?
DADS ARMY DID A BETTER JOB OF PROTECTING BRITAIN AGAINST THE GERMANS.
Perhaps they should turn the National Guard into a tv comedy like dads army was? Perhaps it would appeal to more people then.
