Car Rental Companies

Postby Cazastan » Tue Feb 28, 2006 11:14 am

Can anyone suggest other car rental companies (apart from www.cyprus-car-com) that allow you to hire your car at Larnaca Airport and drive over the border into Northern Cyprus?
Would like to obtain some competitive quotes.

My sis try to do that. Most companies don't allow it. Be interesting to see the responses you get. :)

Just do as we did -- leave the car at the Ledra Palace and walk across, and then get a taxi on the other side. We did this, it was very cheap and was much easier than driving on the "wrong" side of the road !

Good luck either way

dont do it. Z cars are a no-no for the crossing you'll only be nervous and on edge the whole time anyway.

the cab idea is best if you dont own wheels on the island....unless you hav a mate or relative who owns a motor and you can get a cover note for a day or so...

do you still have to show your passport like you are visiting another country when you cross the border?

Correct, the ones from the RoC don't.
The ones from the north do. You have to buy the insurance paper at the border. 3 days/CYP 15
I still have the document here from last September. The company is AXA OYAK and the coverage is stated with:
Third Party Property Damage Limit - 15 000 000 000 TL
Third Party Bodily Injury and death - Unlimited

However I have not heard of any experience as to what happens when a serious issue occurs, i.e. whether they will pay or not....

I work for a car hire company in ayia napa, no insurance will cover you on the other side of the border, and most companies will make you sign to say if anything happens you are fully liable. We cannot help you if something happens to you over there, and we would like our cars back in one peice and still insured. If a car company does allow you to cross in their car pleaser check your insurance for your own sake or it could end up costing you alot of money

I hired through cyrus-car.com, bought the insurance at the border and had no problems at all.
there were a large number of other Z plates there too, and on Sunday Famagusta was full of Greek Cypriot day visitors.
I would reccommend the crossings at Pyla or at Agios Nikolaos, much quiter than Nicosia.
