Here’s an old Cypriot joke…

Many decades ago Makarios visited the Athalassa mental patient hospital to inaugurate a new wing that had just been completed.

Other dignitaries included the Nicosia mayor and the minister of health.

The event’s schedule involved a few little speeches on a wooden platform with a podium and then followed by the cutting of a ribbon at the wing’s front entrance.

As Makarios’ speech started one of the lunatics made his way to the rear of the platform and started pulling at Makarios’ tunic to draw his attention!

Initially Makarios ignored him assuming that it must be a little kid until he could ignore it no more... whence he suddenly turned, looked down at the guy below and worryingly asked… “What?”.

And the lunatic replied…

“Better get down from there mate because I too was pretending to be Makarios and that’s what got me in here! Just so you know…”
