RIAA Lawsuits in Cyprus for illegal file sharing?

Postby djtrax98 » Wed Mar 01, 2006 3:18 am

Does anyone know how the law stands in Cyprus regarding the downloading of copyrighted material?
Does the lawsuits the RIAA from the USA which are being lashed out every so often only apply to the USA or is it worldwide?
So far, i can only see people from the states and a minority few from the UK being sued. Any chance of them hitting Cyprus as well through things like the popular p2p software?
This wont affect me as i buy all of my music, but Am actually thinking about a mate of mine who gets EVERYTHING and i mean everything from these p2p's his computer hasnt been off these networks for months..24/7 and am worried he will get caught..
I have looked everywhere to see if there are any agreements to sue people for illegal file sharing etc here.
Anyone know how the situation stands?

No, but my son will either be paying fines for the rest of his life, or be spending it in prison if they do hit Cyprus.

DJTRAX98, You have nothing to fear here in Cyprus. There are little or no proprietary software property and intellectual property rights here concerning software. The USG have met several times with the GoC counterparts with no solution or future plan for and law change. RIAA would be wasting there time here in Cyprus.
The laws here have not caught up to the current technical capabilities. For instance if you nabbed a hacker in New York City he would quickly be investigated and face charges. Here ??????????

RIAA is wasting their time! Have they managed to reduce the piracy with their actions? Selling the CDs much cheaper is the only way to combat piracy.

POLICE CONFISCATE 8,500 PIRATED CDs AND DVDs

SIMERINI: The GOC police unit for the combat of intellectual property theft last Sunday confiscated about 8,500 CDs and DVDs near Livadia village in Larnaca. The paper reports that this was the third police raid following one in Limassol and one in Ayia Napa. According to unidentified source, the police are planning to continue their campaign against those selling pirated CDs and DVDs.

Wow I guess they were reading the forum.

well when you burn that much ofcource you get busted.
especially with the purpose to sell them.

but sotos is right on this one. when an empty cd costs 50 cents and an original cd 13.00 CYP, the difference is chaotic. especially if one has a student budget, and really enjoys music...

even though, some artists that i believe they worth it, i do buy the originals. from which they most probably get 50 cents.

i dont think companies have any chance against piracy. they can spend money and research but sooner or later hackers will find a way to make copies...

i mean a cd-writer is part of every new computer. what do they expect people to do with it ?
