Shiny floors

Postby Hazza » Sun Mar 05, 2006 12:17 pm

I'm living in an apartment block, I guess its around 25 years old or so. I believe it has the original floor tiles but they are looking very dull. What is the best way of trying to get them looking shiney? If it was my place, I'd probably look at changing them, but because I'm only renting, I'd rather get the current ones looking good.

I don't mind hard work if thats what it takes, but just wondering if there is a product I need to buy to get the desired effect.

Thanks!

What kind of tiles are they? Are they dirty or they are dull for some other reason? I know there are some cleaners that use special machines to clean floors maybe you can contact one of those.

They aren't dirty, just dull looking, more than likely because of age.

Hi Hazza,

If the floor tiles are terrazzo (pieces of marble in a concrete substrate), it is possible to have them ground to remove the dirt and then have them polished and crystallised (to seal them).

It's a messy job - they use carborundum cutters on a thing that looks like a floor polisher and it needs constant lubrication with water.

We had our grantite floor ground and polished in this way, you can see a photo of how it's done at: http://cyprus-property-buyers.com/photo ... _photo.jpg

It may be more cost-effective to lay ceramic tiles on top of your existing floor, providing it is sound.

Regards,

Ouch.....that does look very messy. I guess I'll leave them as they are until I find my own property. Thanks for the tips. They don't look dirty in any way, I just thought they would look nicer if they shine. :)

IS there a thing called mr clean magic eraser in cyprus? If so, get that. I did that at an apartment I lived in before I bought a house. It cleans very easy but you actually have to do it on hands and knees. If you can find it though, the labor will be worth it.
