Is it for breeding maggots, is the object under the lights rotting meat?

This is the closest answer. This is the "artwork" called "a thousand years" by Hirst. This is the description:

Flies happily buzzing around in a glass cube only to finally die. The floor is covered in dead flies. Maggots in a breeding station contained in a white cube are fed with sugar water and metamorphose into flies. A second adjacent glass cube contains a rotting cow`s head which the flies feed on. The flies which accidentally touch the electrocutor get killed.

On the glass there are small holes so people can smell it.

Why would people want to smell it??? As you said, it's "artwork".....not! This kind of cr@p is supposed to make the Public think. Like the pile of bricks and the dissected calf, it's rubbish. Tracy Emin's bed was the biggest joke. Anyone that stands around marvelling at its divertisty is also full of cr@p. Tracy Emin shouldn't have laid in bed for days after splitting up with her boyfriend. She should have made that bed, cleaned her flat, gone out, got plastered and found some other unfortunate guy to impress her "art" on.....

I agree Twinkle - its all rubbish, I bet they have a good laugh at people who walk around the exhibit with a "knowing, arty" look on their faces! They should come and see whats under my sons bed, new life forms at the very least! Much more exiting - and the unmade bed - well that just a bonus!!!
