Did anyone read the article in the CW on Friday about the Government looking into replacing the ageing CA fleet of planes with new ones????? :x

Isn't the company sinking under its own weight? Or is the Government hoping to skim off the surface of these purchases before the elections in May?

President attacks striking pilots

13/03/2006
www.financialmirror.com

Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos attacked the state-owned carrier Cyprus Airways pilots, who went on lightning 24-hour strike on Saturday.

The strike affected 17 flights and approximately 2,700 passengers at the troubled airline.

Papadopoulos said that the strike constituted a setback for the company and that the pilots were not contributing to efforts to save Cyprus' national carrier.

The highly paid pilots have been complaining about aspects of the rescue package agreed before Christmas which the government was olbiged to broker before it woudl be allowed under EU rules to subsidise the lossmaking airline.

Meanwhile, the airline is reported to be going ahead with plans to renew some of its fleet

There you go I didn't imagine it. Go into liquidation, all staff will lose their jobs and reopen the following day under the name Cyprus Airlines. (A la Olympic airways/airlines). Offer the staff new contracts on reduced pay. Take it or leave it. Makes me mad that they can hold the country to ransom and are still the highest paid pilots in Europe. They are just glorified bus drivers. The planes are all computerised now.

yea I mean there ARE other airlines. Let CA ran themselves to the ground. Then the company will close and instead of asking for more, the employees will be looking for jobs that arent there.

Hurrah to cheap airlines to Cyprus!!!!!!!

After the Helios disaster I do not consider price as the number one factor.

Safety comes first.

Airline companies have to comply with strict regulations regarding safety. If CA were to cut back on ridiculous staff wages ie £13,000 per month for a pilot is ludicrous  , then the prices would be cheaper. No need to cutback on checks and safety measures.

Maria, cheap airlines does not necessarily mean low quality or low maintained crafts. Take as an example the easyjet which is the safest airline nowadays... It's a matter of principles not a matter of costs!
