Earthquakes??

Postby jazzy1 » Mon Mar 20, 2006 10:45 am

Coming from the UK, I am used to crap weather but thats ok, you get used to it.

But.....

I have never experienced an EARTHQUAKE!!!

Do they happen often in Cyprus? are the bad?

Also I have read about Sand storms coming across from the desserts.
Is this a regular thing?

How does Cyprus cope with these things, being such a small Island it must be scary.

They happen frequently in the summer months although you often don't feel them as they are out at sea. Have to say experienced only 1 that I felt in the past 5 years. My mum bounced across the patio in a plastic Lordos chair. She thought she was having a heart attack. Thankfully they aren't that serious here. The buildings should also be tested against seismic movement, or something so I'm sure you'll be fine. As for the sand storms only last week we have been suffering from the sand blown in from North Africa. The sky was very hazy and the air quality pretty awful. Once it rained though the air was clearer. However, the cars, roads, patios and pools were a shade of pink for a while....

Cyprus is on the top of the Rift between the African, European and Asian tectonic plates. Strong earthquakes over 6R happen in cyprus every 100 years or so but the rifts can give stronger earthquakes than that.

Earthquakes in Cyprus are a VERY serious, subject, make sure that the houses you buy are built by recognised Civil Engineers who are member of the Cyprus Technical Chamber. The laws are VERY strict on anti-seismic construction.

They tend to happen every year in the spring, but aren't as bad as you imagine. It's not like you're walking through walls of dust :) . The government suggest you keep the kids and those at risk, asthma suffers, elderly etc, in doors until they blow over or get rained out ie no playing outside after school.

Its not all that bad Jazzy. When we had it last week, I just assumed it was quite a foggy day, thats all. Was cheesed off though as I had washed my car a couple of days earlier only for it to get dusty again :(
