Confused about residency

Postby palmtree » Tue Mar 21, 2006 5:03 pm

Hi,

My partner and I are planning to go and live in Cyprus (from the UK) in about 4 years' time, but we're not sure yet if we plan to work once we get there, as it depends on various things and we wanted to play it by ear.

I understand that 'status' (ie 'employed', or 'not working?') has to be declared at the time of applying for a residence permit.

We'll both be 59 yrs old when we go, and although my partner will have taken early retirement from his UK employment, he would no doubt still like to take on some casual work if and when the opportunity came along.
For my own part, I'm a self-employed crafts person and as my sales are internet-based, I can work anywhere; I certainly wouldn't like to give this up.

Here are the questions (!)
1) is it possible to change residency status if your circumstances change - e.g. if you register as 'not working,' can it later be changed to 'working?' And vice versa?

2) I realise that the tax rates are lower for retired people, but are people really expected to just sit and vegetate once they are in receipt of a pension and not be allowed to do any work? (Or is it that it IS allowed, but would be taxed at a normal rate?)

:?: Lots of questions, I know, but I'm really confused about all this and would be really grateful if anyone could clarify it, or perhaps point me in the right direction for some info?
Cheers!

Hi Palmtree

Yes, it's not a problem.

2) I realise that the tax rates are lower for retired people, but are people really expected to just sit and vegetate once they are in receipt of a pension and not be allowed to do any work? (Or is it that it IS allowed, but would be taxed at a normal rate?)

Vegitate, you must be joking! I'm as busy now as I've ever been.

Hi nhowarth,

Thanks very much for your reply - that's very helpful.

You sound like you're having a ball over there - good on you!

If you decide to come over as "retired", my small piece of advice is not to buy a duty free car, if you later declare you're working or in business you'll have to repay all the duty.
