Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

rulla you state that you lived in london for years, did you work there? because i notice in one of your replies you dont like foriengners coming to Cyprus to work and taking jobs from Cypriots. Trust me, no Cypriot would work at these jobs. i find your posts extremely childish and insensitive and you cover it up by then stating you were only joking. None of your replies are helpful, and untill i read you were 53 i thought you were only about 14.
Did we tell you to go home when you escaped to London, i doubt it....

She is legal with a work permit, Nationality is Canadian. We have never seen anything like this in the US or Canada and there are Non Profit and Non Government Organizations to protect the epmoyee and the employers rights. It is sad that in the EU there are cases like this. She has left her employer last week. She does not want to pursue any legal action, because then she is probably not going to work in this town again. Most Cypriots know each other and will be informed as to not to employ her.

Thank You ALL for your replies and support. I'd like to see that way of exploitation disappear from Cyprus, but I doubt it will happen unless the EU tightens the control on the labor and sexual harrassment laws.

Sadly the perpetrators of these shameful practises are Cypriot employers.

Shame on them!

I have heard many stories of people in Cyrpus not getting paid on time, verbal abuse from employers, long work days without overtime, etc. Is there not a labour board or some other agency to which workers can appeal?

I am glad your lady friend quit that place. No one should take that kind of treatment. But if that employer owes her back wages, she is entitled to the money and should fight to get it. Otherwise, employer will continue to behave in this manner.

3 options on that list, Greek, Turkish or English. Those that need guidance or help regarding employment, then I strongly suggest you have a look at and bookmark the above link.

Cypriots are not pigs as you might think. JUst because she is going to complain it doesnt mean no one will employ her. Its not the damn mob. Too many movies....She got a bad case of an employer not all of them are like that. If she just does nothing about it, then in the end she is as much to blame because she let someone do that to her and just did nothing. Go to the police and report the ass and make sure no one else gets the same treatment.

Cypriots are not pigs anymore than any other person.
sadly many seem to think that foreign employees are slaves and treat them accordingly, it's a culture thing.

She has to stand up and demand her rights straight away from the employer. If the employer does not show understanding at all then take actions to move to another. Labour can switch from one company to another! Sometimes depends on your ability to find the right employer. Generally multinational companies or offshore comnpanies are much better employers! Dont be stuck to one employer If you feel that you are being exploited! I speak from personal Experience.
