I run a online forum similar to this just not as fancy its a basically a template.

Somebody keeps trying to hack into it.

So.

2. How do i stop them
3. What can they do once they are in?

Once they are in, they can deleted your database.

What forum software are you using and which version?
What version of SQL/PHP are your hosts using?
Who is your host?

On a similar note to what cyprusgrump advised, your problem could also lie with modifications. Each mod that you install changes the software programming, with the possibility of opening up small holes here and there.

Have you checked the serverlogs on your account to see what is written there? Do you have serverside access?

Make daily backups. Even if they erase everything you can still restore it again and loose just some posts :)
