Postby macwomble » Sat Apr 22, 2006 9:15 pm

My family will be moving out come July/August and our youngest, 14, will be repeating a year so that he can learn (a bit) and be taught in Greek...any suggestions or words of comfort/warning re schools in Tala?
We are ALL seriously looking forward to it and are trying NOT to hope for too much!!lolol

We would also appreciate any advice re internet connections/phone tarrifs etc/and generally anything a "newbie" would need....
look forward to arguing with you all about any subject you care to mention...but hopefully over a glass of wine or 12 in the village square..!!

Do you think your daughter will be able to learn good enough Greek to follow gymnasium classes with just one year of learning? I think you should combine that with intensive private Greek courses.

I have just arrived here in Polemi, I have a 5 year old and found it really easy to register him in school, he is going to the local village school, they needed birth certificate, Passport copy, and £25 ! and that was it he starts on the 2nd May, i think i'm more scared than him. They don't have half terms and in-service days like they do in the UK just 2 weeks at Christmas, 2 weeks at easter and 10 weeks in the summer ! I have been trying to find some sort of school clubs, holiday clubs for the summer, but they don't seem to be any !

As for information on other things, to set up the internet is quite easy, you have to go down to the Cyta Shop and ask for a conection, they give u an e-mail address and username and a help line number for any problems, I had no problems came home turned on computer and hey presto ! the only problem i have is there is no broadband in Polemi ! aparently it has just arrived in Tala ( lucky you !) You have to take your passport with you, but thats it.

Everyone has been really nice to me in this village (there isn't many english) You will have a lot more english, but the cypriots are so friendly and love kids especially boys.

Well Good luck with the move and if you have any other questions or problems give me a shout, i may have only been here a week but my family have been coming to the island for over 20 years my dad is a book of helpful information !

Many thanks for your comprehensive reply pinkjulia. We don't imagine for one second sotos that he is going to find it very easy (my 14 year old is a boy), but he is a very clever lad and is extremely good at fitting in with new people. I am hoping to include extra Greek lessons, not only for him, but for myself, as I never managed to learn any languages at school, and always regretted it. I have however, been told that it would probably be easier for all of us to learn Greek after we get there (maybe the people at paphosfinder are incorrect).

Names of good schools close to Tala would be helpful if anyone can give us some. And, I look forward to chatting with you all again soon.
