Your poll is not very correct. There are 2 questions which can have different answers. I don't know how to skate but I would try skating if such thing was available. You are talking about ice skating right?

I was under the impression that there was a ice skating rink in Nicosia?

There is a Cypriot girl living in London that is of Olympic quality and throughout her life has been rated either number one or two in the UK. She wanted to represent Cyprus but was refused on the grounds that the country that she represents must have an Ice Rink and so she was not allowed to represent Cyprus.

She then wanted to represent England but was told that she would not stand a chance as her surname was Kyriacou and there was no way that she would win even if she was the better skater simply because they will not want a Cypriot to win something on behalf of England. They'd prefer and an English name to appear last rather than show the world that an 'ethnic' can win for England.

I know all the above as FACT as I was involved in the negotiations.

The real loosers are the Cypriots.
They do not know the appreciate and encourage talent.
The only thing they seem to appreciate is drink and dance and keep breaking plates.

Why you say this dms?

An ice skating rink would be welcomed in Cyprus but not having one is not a crime. Cyprus never had any tradition in those kind of sports due to our weather.

iam not saying that we dont need a rink.
Yes we do need one, so that we can all go there.

my comments were against the attitude of the cyprus people and/or the government.
when they know that there is a world class talent in Kyriacou, what have they done to help her?

Cyprus never had any tradition in those kind of sports due to our weather.

I dotn think Cyprus encourages any sport for that matter, all they do is some knee jerk actions when someone wins a world event.
what has the govt of cyprus done to encourage any form of sport? football is being promoted just because of commercial reasons.
There was a talk of tennis for about 2-3 weeks after bagdatis played in the finals.
there were some cypriots who won in the commonwealth games, what did the govt do or did the people even care for them, they were in the finals, they won gold.

I have got to agree with DMS here.

Unless it involves Profit for someone then the Cypiots don't usually want to get involved.

I have to say, I would love a rink here in Cyprus, I used to go quite regularly when Iwas young and absolutely loved it, despite numerous bruises after every visit! I have two children and my daughter, after watching a new dvd out now 'ice princess' has been begging me to go to one to which I have had to answer , 'maybe next time we go to England.' There must be someone out there who is willing to back it, I'd certainly promote it!
