Steel frame houses

Postby Sotos » Thu Apr 27, 2006 12:02 am

I see some houses that are build on a steel frame. Are those better than concrete?

These are often quicker to build, because the steel framework can be transported more easily than concrete, and the basic structure for a house can be assembled in 1 day !

As to better ??? I don't think so, but if you need quicker and/or cheaper then steel can definitely be the way to go

It can be worse cause of the steel properties and reaction with environmental changes. But someone who knows what they are doing can make it work :)

Steel (and wood) farme properties are the way forward in Cyprus; in 20 years no-one will be building the old concrete and steel boxes we have now. Steel and wood frame properties can be built in half the time, at 2/3 of the cost and are much more flexible should you want to change your room layout subsequently. Plus, through the use of SIPS, provide decent insulation, reducing heat in the summer and cold in the winter.

Interesting. Do you know which developers are constructing using steel/wood frames?

Hi Hazzard

There are a few companies erecting steel/wood frame homes, the largest is in Nicosia. A number of Cypriots who have used this technology in the US are returning to Cyprus, setting up companies and using it here.

The steel frame properties offer advantages in terms of being radical.

Steel frame buildings can have massive window openings and need much less support for the roof. On Steel frame buildings the frame is taking the weight and the walls take none, it all depends what you want from the finished house. Steel frame buildings suit apartment blocks or office buildings more. When building summer house of one or two levels then concrete is more than sufficient.

Wood frame houses are the cheapest and even arrive in kit form, within a week you can have a whole house built and plastered. But they do look horrible.

GG, I have an image now of Ikea selling flatpack houses!

Sotos, near where I live, a Zorbas bakers has been open for a week now. 6 weeks ago, where it is at the moment, it was just an empty wasteground. It was put up with the steel framework.

Wood frame properties do not look bad, they have a brick or stone exterior and you cannot their are timber framed.

Glorified sheds.!!!!!

These are like the ones that some guy has built in Lefkara, I think they should be banned unless they are made of raw timber logs.
