Visiting From The USA

Postby monksb » Fri Apr 28, 2006 2:00 am

Hi all. My family and I are planning on visiting Cyprus in September and I was wondering what's the best way to bring money into the country. I cannot get Cypus Pounds travellers checks in the states and I dont want to change currency twice. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I hope your stay in Cyprus will be a memorable one and that you will enjoy every day of your holiday, on this wonderful island. I find that changing my money in the numerous shops that , quite legaly , act as exchange centres, is better value that going to a bank since they do not charge commision . The rates for $ , £ , etc are clearly displayed on boards generally outside the shop. Of course you can draw cash from Cash Machines located through out Cyprus.
Have a great holiday.

You can use your american credit and debit cards at stores. My family does the opposite when they come to the states. Also you can get Euros or take with you american dollars and exchange it there.

Hi monksb

As Lana has said, bring your US$ (or US$ travellers cheques). The exchange rates are posted daily at http://www.bankofcyprus.com/currency.asp?lang=EN

It's a long flight from the States - we had a number of Rotarians visiting last week from California - I think they said it took something like 14 hours including transfers.

Thanks everybody for all the help, it looks like I will be bringing US$. A couple of other quick questions, is it better to hire a car from the states or wait until we get to Cyprus? Also is there any advantage bringing cash or travelers checks?

We have never been to the island before and are really looking foreward to it.

Hi Nigel, getting to Cyprus isn't too bad, getting back to the States is a pain, we have a thirteen hour lay over in Heathrow and its overnight. No idea yet if we will get a hotel or rough it in the airport.

well, with travelers checks you will be on the safer side. I'd give you the ususal advise - take a bit of everything, some cash, some travelers checks plus your credit cards.

About the car: most of the major car rental companies are in Cyprus as well (Hertz, Avis...), but not all of them have their own subsidiary so to say. Some of them have a deal with a local company to serve their customers.
For the price I don't think its much difference whether you prebook or rent on the spot. Sometimes there are good online offers though...
