An official Government statement was as follows:

The Minister of Finance Mr Michalis Sarris held a meeting yesterday with representatives of EU member states in Nicosia, to whom he presented Cyprus’ strategy for adopting the Euro.

Mr Sarris briefed EU member states’ Ambassadors and finance attachιs on the basic parameters, structure and timeframe for adopting the European single currency on 1 January 2008, as decided by the Cyprus Government in collaboration with the Central Bank of Cyprus.

The Finance Minister gave special emphasis on the communication aspect of the strategy and outlined the basic pillars pertaining to the timely and reliable briefing of all citizens.

Another question is what will be the exchange rate for conversion? I understand it will be about 15%+/- of where it is today.

I notice that in the true spirit of democracy, our lousy government never gave us a referendum.

Not all democracies use referendum's, others use them for every little matter eg. Italy. They use other systems such us the house of parliament.

It is like you telling me that USA is not democratic because the president is not directly voted by the people.
