Learning after School?

Postby Sotos » Mon May 15, 2006 12:55 am

After you finish school/university do you continue your education in some way e.g. by reading books related to your profession by taking courses and seminars etc?

George Santayana once said that the wisest mind has something yet to learn.

Learning is not compulsory but in my opinion one should of course keep reading otherwise it will all have been a waste of time if you don’t maintain the knowledge and enrich it.

Also as Oscar Wilde said
You know more than you think you know, just as you know less than you want to know.
so keep going

Well, I must say that I have never stopped reading and attending several trainings in a year... and at same time doing an MBA on a part time basis.... Are these too much??? :)

Seminars are nightmares
But sometimes useful

I tell you though they taught me patience especially when a speakers goes on and on and on . Last one we had a Lebanese speaker a torture I was ready to kill my self he was going on close to three hours. I don’t care if he is the authority in the field he was boring as hell and I ended up having to read his speech all over again because I remembered nothing.

I agree that seminars are sometimes useful but it is rare to find one that is interesting and informative. Often they are held by people who want to win your business.

In business the best way to keep on learning is through personal experience. In my profession designers learn through experience not by reading books, design is created by lateral thinking - books can't help with this. I'm sure it's not the same for all professions.

Andri - are you talking about a previous career or the most important job of all - being a mum?
