On Wednesday, family and friends bade the final farewell to Kostas Iliakis, the Greek Air Force pilot who fell in the line of duty last week, after his plane collided in midair with a Turkish fighter plane close to the island of Karpathos. The pilot will be laid to rest at the Agios Loukas Cemetery, Chania. The President of the Republic laid a wreath on the grave of the deceased pilot. At the time of the funeral, 16 Turkish aircrafts entered the Athens FIR, over the islands of Lesvos and Chios, without having submitted flight plans. Two engagements were recorded during the reconnaissance procedure.

Flight Lieutenant Kostas Iliakis, 35, was an experienced pilot with 1,000 flight hours in A7s and another 700 in F16s. The Air Force is in two days of mourning.
