Government reviewing duty on used cars?

Postby mountainman » Sun Jun 04, 2006 2:32 pm

Cyprus Weekly page 4 reports
'The government is to hold consultations with the importers of used cars from EU countries with a view to bringing down the consumer tax on such vehicles'

'Supreme Court judge Minos Cronides cancelled a decision by the Customs Department to impose a £5415 consumer tax on a used Mercedes brought to the island by a UK Cypriot.'

That should put the cat amongst the pigeons, mebbe we will all be able to bring decent cars into Cyprus without being mugged by the government at last.

I recently brought this car to Cyprus..

Image

I had owned it for 8 months, it had done over 6000km's but because I had not used it on the road, I had no insurance proof...

Therefore they wanted me to pay the duty, cyp£650.. which I did..

Thank heavens I decided to build it with the 200bhp motorcycle engine and not the 2.0 cosworth turbo...

It would have cost me cyp£6000 in duty then!!!!

Daylight robbery, yet completely legal... Cyprus is making money out of EU movements which is contrary to EU regulations... Imagine if the UK did this... I know of people who have bought a duty free car in Cyprus and taken it to the UK and they pay no duty.. yet my duty paid car had to pay duty again to be used in Cyprus...

sheesh!

Hi Both,

The Cyprus govt. has recently had its wrists slapped by the EU for this profiteering.

I'm sure that the government is really concerned about a wrist slap

But if one of their own high court judges rules against them surely a change must be inevitable

i heard that Car Import Duties are going down within 3 months... mostly for bigger sized engines, which currently is a rip off ofcourse. Finally RANGE ROVER SPORT would cost under 40K :), used UK TUAREG @ 20K, BMW 3series convertile @ ~15K

We are bringing our Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE with us.

Hopefully I've done my homework correct, and have correspondance from Cypriot Excise to say we are correct in thinking:

Owned for over 6 months (Reg. new 1st March, will be entering CY approx. 10th Sep)
Will have been used continually for this 6 month period in member state prior to import
Will have done over 6k miles
Will be able to provide reg. document, shipping (Ferry) note etc.

Is there anything else I may have missed?

Thanks

Only that if you sell it, the buyer must pay the Duty, I think.

Are you sure about that ?

for a duty free car when you sell it the buyer must pay the duty. But now its different with europe only a expatriate cypriot (EU) who go back in cyprus can have a duty free.

Like my friend (French/cypriot) go to live in cyprus, he will buy a new car with a duty free ( but also he must do the military ... )

But with europe its different when you register the car, you dont have V plate. How they can know ?

I hope all that duties will change soon !!

But if the price go down, what going on for a cypriot who bought one year before a car like a z4 3.0 liter brand new, like 50 000cyp, if he want sell it 1 year after, and you can find the same from uk for 19 000 ???

this is something i need that someone explain me  :?:

My understanding is that we will not have to pay duty on entering CY.

If we sell the car, we need permission from Director of Excise and Duty.

Cost of duty payable decreases over a 10 year period, eventually to 0.

If we were to sell before 10 years is up, EITHER the seller or the buyer has to pay the duty.

Either way, the relevant amount would need to be paid to Govt.
