police problems

Postby costanza » Fri Jun 09, 2006 8:45 am

got pulled over outside the dhekelia base on my way to work this morning. after 5 minutes of pointless tests on my breaks, lights, complete family history they noticed my tax disc was out of date... i only got here 2 weeks ago and assumed my dad had stuck the new one onto the windscreen, but it seems he hasnt. he paid it, so there must be a record of that somewhere. but the police said that even if we have paid it i still have to go to court now because it wasnt displayed on the windscreen.

if the car is registered to my father, can i still get done for this? i've got to go back to the UK in 3 weeks time to start my teacher training course... unless i get a police record from this, in which case i'll be thrown off the course before it even starts and won't be allowed to teach in the uk.

do you think its realistic only my dad will have to go to court and get a fine over this or will i have to stay in cyprus longer and go to court too?

the only reason they're doing all this is because it was a new police man, the old guy was teaching him the ropes on how to be a twat.

grrrr @ police

I don't know Cypriot law, but in the UK if you do not display a valid tax disc, even if you've paid for a new one, even if it's in your glovebox it is still an offence resulting in a fine.

yeh see i thought not displaying it was just a minor offence and dont mind if my dad gets a fine, but i specifically asked the police this morning if it would mean i had points on my licence, if it would mean i had a criminal record, if i would have a fine or if it meant my dad would have points on his licence/criminal record/a fine because i know nothing about driving laws really, i'm only a new driver myself. and he told me that i was going to court with my father, i'd get a fine, it would be on my police record and i'd get points on my licence. so i was in a bit of shock. now i've had time to think about it though i'm sure he was lying for whatever reason. trying to look big infront of the new policeman he was training or something...
police get no love from me.

We have been stopped by police last summer with my friend, 28km/h more in larnaca ( the big road with all the round about next to police station ) the problem was the policeman was teaching a new one ...
So we had a fine, normally they ve got some problem with the french driving license who is to long to enter in their PDA. It was one week before go back to france, my friend forgot to pay, 3 month after we tried to pay but to late, go to court. My friend havent been to court because he was in France. Now he hasnt been stopped at the airport (black list) and he never received anything back from the court ...

did you show a cy id card ? or cy driving licence ?

And you cannot go to court for something like that, they ve go other thing to do at the court ...

if he haven't give you a fine, maybe you are just free and the policeman would just dont let you going like that in front of the new guy.

my dad's sorted this all out. he went down to the police station and showed them the tax disc, they said that was fine and nothing further would be done. so he had a go at them for scaring me about going to court and criminal records, and for checking my breaks, pressing on my acceleration pedal, making me turn my lights on and off etc without a legitimate reason. (they did all that before noticing the missing tax disc)

as soon as i get home from work i'll stick the tax discs on the windscreen so they dont have any excuses to stop me again.

I would be more worried about about "i know nothing about driving laws really", we have enough of bad drivers as it is... please know the laws and how to drive before getting in a car, the consequences are not worth it.

I don't know about anyone else but I've been driving in the UK for 15 years without an accident (Touch wood....... )

I know the rules of the road, I just don't know your judicial system.

Please don't tarnish me with the reputation of an inexperienced driver! :)
