halloween?

Postby GorillaGal » Sun Aug 13, 2006 9:33 pm

i have a question...it may be stupid, but i don't know much about Cyprus, and i would like to know more, so please bear with me.
does Cyprus celebrate Halloween? if so, how?
Here in the USA, on Oct. 31st, the children wear costumes and go door to door trick or treating for candy. it is also a good night for adults to dress in costumes and go to parties.
it is also traditional to cut a face into a hollowed out pumpkin, and to place a candle inside.
Just wondering if you do similar.
thanks!

tell me more....
is there a traditonal costume, or do you dress up as creative and fancy or whatever you want?
what else is traditional during this time?
is it one day, or a time frame?

when I lived in Cyprus I used to dress up as something differnet each year ( a french maid, a flamenco dancer etc) and then we'd go party all night........it goes for about a week
but each city hosts parades and floats - a bit like a mardi gras
lots of fun!

I found this on a site..im sure if u google ul find more info!

"The Limassol Carnival
The festival lasts for a whole week, with jolly and amusing masquerading. This custom is very old, going back to pagan rituals. With the passage of time it has acquired a different, purely entertaining character, with a large, popular following. The festival starts with the entrance parade of the King Carnival, followed by a fancy-dress competition for children in the local stadium. During the Carnival parade in the main streets, large crowds from all over the island gather to watch the floats with the serenade and other masqueraded groups. Many fancy-dress bolls and parties take place at many hotels every night"

"Once a year, Limassol throws a huge pre-Lenten bash with 11 days of colourful, and sometimes noisy, events.
The fun starts with the Carnival King entering the town with much pomp and ceremony, and goes on to include a children's parade, various serenaders' shows and finally the Grand Carnival Parade. The whole town comes alive for the festival period, making it a good time to be around."

Thre isnt a traditional costume, ppl dress up whatever they like!I remeber this year cz of the brid flu lots ppl dressed up as birds haha.

My dad loves the Carnival!! He always tells us how much fun he used to have when the Carnival was on, as a Kid growing up in Cyprus! And the 'Kataklismo' (I think that's what it's called) where people had/have water fights!

I believe that both the carnival, and the 'Kataklsmo' date back to pagan times, but as the years have gone by, they have been given a slight religios meaning. The Carnival marks the beggining of lent, and the Kataklismo...urm...I actually don't know what religios meaning it's been given...something to do with Jesus...shockingly!

I'm not too sure about Halloween in Cyprus...although it is celebrated here in England!! Very fun!!

"Trick or Treat??"

:D

natty-- in the UK is Halloween celbrated the same--kids trick or treating on oct. 31st, and pumpkins with faces carved into them? i had read in the UK they used turnips instead of pumpkins traditionally, because pumpkins weren't native.
