Moving to Cyprus & Army Conscription

Postby nk123 » Fri Sep 15, 2006 6:38 am

I'm living in the uk right now, and i have 2 years left at university. I'm thinking of going for some time to cyprus when i finish to get some work, maybe try to get more involved over there. all my family are from cyprus and when i go to visit i always need an exit visa as my dad was born there- but does anyone know what i'd need to do if i moved over to work for, lets say, a year? i have no problem with spening some time in the army- but how long would it be for? i've been told it wont be the full 2 years, im not sure if thats right or not. if anyone knows it would be a massive help to my preparations.

should cyprus have an army at all???????since they have never waged war in their history .................but for island of under one million people cyprus has the biggest militery machine in the world it has one hundred thousand soldiers on our land greek speaking turkish speaking english and the u.n ..................this is unheard of anywhere else in the world lol especialy for an island that has no legal independence..........

Hello NK123,

if you were born outside cyprus, my understanding (now we are in the EU) is you don't need to do army for as long as you don't have cyprus citizenship.

Once you apply for citizenship (ne real benefits) you will need to do army. The last i heard it is now 3 months (possibly changed from 6)

Depending on the type of job you do, you may need citizenship to practice (eg, being an architect, doctor and so on).

These are the rules so far, you can live in cyprus as long as you want without the fear of conscription. I have an exit visa, i now never show it and it never gets asked for!!

hope this helps.
