Erol,

I understand what you are saying about prostitution. It's going to exist anyway should they not be regulated, well yes I can see what you are saying. But do you really want northern Cyprus to sell itself to the world as a destination to have paid sex and drugs.

About drugs I have to disagree with you. I understand what you are saying about alcohol and cigarettes and I am not proposing prohibition although interestingly enough it is steadily getting harder to smoke inb public in some countries. In ireland for example it has been banned in any public building (including pubs). What do you suggest that people queue up at the local drug store for their supply of cannabis, heroin or cocaine? Anyway I still think you have to be careful, I have worked closely with drug users and their problems would not end if they could buy their supply legally because the level of state benefits they are on would still cause them to commit crimes to pay for their habit.

No I do not want that. I do think we could 'sell' ourselves to the world as the most liberal and progressive country in the mediteranean though. For me Holland and Amsterdam are psynonemous with drugs and prostituion but with progressive liberal attitudes. I would for Cyprus to achieve a similar status.

I suggest that cannabis is sold in a controled way, like alchol and cigarets are today and that herion and cocaine are prescibed to addicts by doctors.

It costs a hard drug user in the region of £800 per day to feed a habit. If this addiction was supplied through prescription then the vast majority of crime related to this habit would be removed.
There is very good historical evidence that hard drug addicts, given a clean and reliable supply of drugs can function normaly in society. After WW1 many people returned to the UK addicted to laudunum. These people were treated with leagal supplies prescibed by doctors and they included government minsiters and some famous writers. All of the problems associated with hard drugs today (crime and deaths of addicts as the main ones) did not exist then. They started to appear along with prohibition.

Anyway it is not very likely in my opinion that North Cyprus or a united Cyprus is going to turn itself into the 'Amsterdam' of the med anytime soon, so there is not much to worry about. We are too conservative here from what I can see for that to happen.

I think marketing Northern Cyprus as a backpackers resort as well as high class resort would be an excellent way of marketing it.
We could even have students wearing t-shirts saying..Equal rights for Turkish Cypriots or...Here I am in the TRNC?
Ending cannabis prohibition would certainly be a good way of starting it.

It may have been a rip, but I think someone should record it. Perhaps it could a bi-communal hit...
