So why are they resisting it so badly, turkcyp? That's the part I don't get...

It is preety simple really. They are trying to get EU to undertsnad that Eu shoudl start trading with north as well. She is not willing to give de-facto recognition to RoC without getting de-facto recognition of TRNC.

Again I must emphasize, de-facto recognition does not mean full political recognition. There are very different levels of recognition, and the de-facto recognition is the lowest of them.

Hmmm... that does make sense, but still, how willing would Turkey be to jeopardize her EU prospective for such a minor issue as this? Was the EU's demand for Turkey to initial the Protocol in Brussels not the reason Erdogan threatened to leave the Summit on the 16th (thus causing a change in the terms on the 17th, asking her to sign it prior to the actual commencement of her accession talks)? I think I read that in some newspaper...

Lets be realistic, if tassos push's to hard two things will happen, one the E.U will get pissed of with his blackmail and two turkey just might say "forget the E.U and i will do partnership with russia and israel".
Now do you think the big boys in the E.U who did not let turkey walk out on the negotiations will let her run off and forge a marriage with the above mentioned, the answer is 'no' they will not, and if they were to let that happen they most certainly would not let little cyprus and turk hater tassos be the reason.

My humble opinion is that tassos has got his head in the clouds and unfortunately has duped the gc community into believing that his veto is the end all to everything, but in the real world of politics the E.U does want turkey in the club.

All i ask is for the gc on this forum to stop for one minute and forget all plans, all the assosciated problems that go with cyprus, and look at the bigger picture.

Do not let tassos fool you and lead you and us the tc at the same time down a dead ally where ultimately we will all lose and become what we all fear the lepers of the E.U.

This is dreaming to. Israel + Russia can never give Turkey what EU is offering. So for Turkey it is very hard to reject the offers EU makes. On the other hand, nobody is irreplacable at any cost as well. There is a limit that Turks will put upto in order to be a full member. Turks are very emotional people. They do not always act rational, but sometimes let their anger, and passion dictates their choices.

But having said this, there is also a limit that RoC can use its veto threat to get what she wants from Turkey, during the negotiations. At some point she will start to piss the big boys of Europe.

Have a good day,

Very true.

But the argument was whether signing the Protocol is an issue for Turkey or not. I think that T-Pap (appropriating Insan's 'term', hope no case of copyright infringement can be substantiated :D ) has some kind of a plan in using Turkey's signature, because obviously he is not interested in trading with Turkey or gaining the right to go on vacation in Turkey... He's after something, and the fact that Turkey resists signing the Protocol so viciously, makes me believe that Turkey's signature is the tool he needs to get it, whatever it is...
