There is an article in Cyprus Mail today titled "A corner of Britain preparing for the euro ". What they refer as a "corner of Britain" are the British bases in Cyprus!! Why they do this? Are the serving the British interests or they do it because many of their readers are British and they want to satisfy them?

Thats what I think it is - its the newspaper of Cyprus dedicated to making the British colonial supporters in Cyprus happy.

I dont think you should read too much into this expression its just as a few years ago the Harringay , Green Lanes area of London might have been described as a Little corner of Cyprus.

To answer the second part of your question I think that they are trying to satisfy their mainly British readership.

Though now Cyprus is in the EU it could be making moves to influence English speaking EU nationals living in Cyprus who have the right to vote in elections.

Too be honest sotos I read the Cy mail regulaly but never looked at is as a political paper but having thought about it I'm not sure now

Better finish before I get shot down by the more politically astute members of the forum!!

.

Do you really beleive that Britons living in Cyprus still think of Cyprus as or wish it to be a Colony?

Just a question not a statement

Cool Emphatically NO! The very reason britons come here to live is to get away from the lunacy that is the U.K. these days. God forbid that it was a colony..... As "aliens" we expect to try to settle into the community, abide by the countries rules and regulations and pay our way - the very things that are Not expected of people arriving in U.K. these days.
And despite the occasional person the Cypriots are a friendly bunch of people. (unless your a Cypriot retunee from the U.K. etc and then you are lower than an ants knee to some people) Confused

I dont think they think of it as a colony - but with many MANY Britons, they seem to think as the British Empire as 'the good guys' and how they could do no wrong...so many people in this country (I reside in north London) dont know about the many negatives the British Empire inflicted around its colonies.

Therefore to me, this is why Cyprus-Mail takes the stance that it does... to make British people happy - as people or organisations such as Papadopolous and EOKA (that have a history of standing up to the British) are often condemned by Cyprus-Mail.

Thanks for the answer I wouldnt argue with what you say

Its quite frightening how newspapers (or should I say newspaper owners) world wide can influence politics of countries

I get the impression Cypriots living in the UK mainly stick to London?

From my experience, Londoners are not representative of the rest of the UK. I have lived in London and many other places in the UK and they can be the most inward and closed minded people. Like the people of Cyprus there are many cultures and perspectives that are not considered.
