The Archimedes Screw ... Still in use today!

Archimedes (287-212 BC) invented the angled water screw device for raising water upwards from the ground.

Still used for irrigating fields in India :D

The Antikythera mechanism is a cool one :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antikythera_mechanism But there are many innovations in mathematics and other science fields that are the basis of modern science.

My favourite is Heron of Alexandria. He invented the first recorded steam engine. One of the greatest mathematicians/engineers of the ancient world. Imagine if he realised its potential, we could have had an industrial revolution much, much earlier. Where would we be today? :shock:
