:) Don't misunderstand me, Lena. I may not "belly dance," but I dance what one might call a "modified tsiftetelli" and a mean zeimbekiko (always lady-like though ;)). You see, while I was being "cultivated," whenever I would venture onto the dance floor at Greek cultural events, my mother would whisper in my ear, "don't bounce, don't shake" (by the time my sister came along, my mother was too tired to bother). If given the slightest impression that I was bouncing or shaking, she'd send my father onto the dance floor, and I'd suddenly find myself dancing with him mpallo style. :)

Denizaksulu, will you be one of the men joining us??? :)[/quote]

What did you think about the two styles of audience in the clips above. The first thing that came to mind when I saw the Turkish Girl dancing on Greek television was how dirty they made it look. It looked very crude and more like lap dancing. I did not want to say anything but as you have brought up decency in dancing..Or at least I think you have...The Greek guys were salivating like crazy and showing it ???

Oooooh Yyyesssss.

But you have to give the Zorba treatment first. However I prefer the Cypriot Ouzo/Raki instead of Zivania. But Zorba never had Zivania, I think Its best that way. Whether I would be able to stand up afterwards is a different story.

I brought up decency in dancing on the part of the woman, Zan. Unless the male observer has been castrated, I can't blame him for licking his lips at the sight of an attractive, provocatively clad female erotically displaying her physical attributes on the dance floor. It's a visceral biological response. Now, explain to me belly dancing as an artform.

Sorry, Denizasulu, no Ouzo or Raki for you. If you dance with us, you do it straight. It's gotta come from the soul, not the alcohol.

I think you will find the female role as the provocateur equally as forgivable in that case.

What I meant was that the Turkish guys did not try to rub themselves up against the dancer.

Art form???? Maybe a remnant of the Geisha girls.

I think not. Whereas, she accosted the Greek, providing him with little room when he rose to the occassion ...

... the Turks had the whole dance floor. :)

Modern Belly Dancing has lost its old glitz. In the good old days, it used to be quite different. Nowadays it seems that anybody who wants to make some money starts wriggling there floppy bits. To study real art one needs to study real Egyptian Raks el-Arabi. It is pure family entertainment. Experts will tell you of various movements simulating movements of the shifting sands the camel shuffle ( my nomenclature ). All the different movements representing some idea. A Turkish Belly Dancer might suffice in Greece but they would be booed off the stage in Egypt. Turkish ones are too skinny as well. Now here talks the expert.
