PRESIDENT TALAT CALLS ON CHRISTOFIAS TO RESUME NEGOTIATIONS

Postby halil » Tue Feb 26, 2008 10:02 am

President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the Cyprus problem could be solved in the period ahead within the framework of the UN parameters.

He said that a future solution should be based on the political equality of the two sides and two founding states.

President Talat held a press conference this afternoon, just hours after the AKEL Leader – Speaker of the Greek Cypriot House of Representatives Dimitris Christofias won the Presidential elections in South Cyprus.
ٍSoon after the announcement of the results, President Mehmet Ali Talat telephoned Mr Christofias to congratulate him on his victory.

This afternoon, President of the Republic Mehmet Ali Talat held a press conference during which he called on the new Greek Cypriot Leader to resume negotiations as soon as possible to bring about a solution to the Cyprus problem and to reunite the island.

Pointing out that the Greek Cypriot people voted in favor of change, the President expressed the hope that the elections will start a new period in Cyprus.

"I genuinely congratulate Mr Christofias and I call on him to co-operate in the process of negotiations, which should start as soon as possible", he said.

Noting that the Turkish Cypriot Side will use the new period as an opportunity for a settlement, President Talat said the Cyprus problem could be solved within the UN parameters based on the political equality of the two peoples and the equal status of two constituent states.
Drawing attention to the fact that the solution of the Cyprus problem will lead to the setting up of a partnership state, the President underlined the importance of the establishment of a new partnership state which will be approved by the two peoples of the island in a referendum.

Noting that the new period would be difficult, the President said that the Turkish Cypriot Side was in support of a solution acceptable for both sides.

Referring to the 2004 Referenda on the UN Peace Plan in Cyprus, Mr Talat reminded that the Turkish Cypriot Side had voted in favor of the peace plan while the Greek Cypriot Side had changed its mind at the last minute and rejected the plan.

Stressing that the period ahead will not be a period for image making, he said “it will not be a right manner first to say that ‘we are ready to accept’ but then to reject with a NO campaign”, warning that such a move will cement the division of the island.

The Leader of the AKEL Party – Speaker of the Greek Cypriot House of Representatives Dimitris Christofias won yesterday’s Presidential election by gaining the support of more than 53% of the voters.

Mr Christofias will be sworn in on Thursday, the 28th of February as the new President of the Greek Cypriot Administration in South Cyprus.

I hope he means what he says, but why does he feel the need to bring up the Annan plan a plan in favour of only turks and say how we rejected it? if it was the sameAnnan plan but in favour only of the south side like the Anna to the turks the turkish side would have said NO.

A plan that is Fair the BOTH sides not just one im sure most of us in the south will accept a fair plan.

The world waits with baited breath!! Business throughout Europe, want a quick solution and a opening up of trade to the North. The $ signs are ringing, great investment potential, untapped wealth waiting to be realised.
The sticking point GC business, they will be in competition on a level playing field, the South would suffer !!!

We are already competing with French, Swiss and Greek banks. Our supermarkets are facing fierce competition from Carrefour. Our telecommunications industry has been open to foregn competition since 2004 as have our airlines. I don't think we'll panic too much from our TC competitors, on the contrary the will need to raise their service offering which will benefit the entire economy.

I think you miss the point,it is not the TC competition,it is the rest of Europe on a larger scale. The South has limited competition from Europe, the North will not be so greedy.
What is attractive is the untapped areas of the North, easy movement to Turkey, and the finest tourist areas, underused and ripe for exploiting.

I think you're the one that missed the point. Being in the EU Cyprus has been exposed to fierce competition in all industries from EUrope. If you're talking about tourism then guess who will be the first to exploit these ares in the north in case of a solution?

Halil said (quoting Talat):-
He said that a future solution should be based on the political equality of the two sides and two founding states.

If the independence of Cyprus had been based on universally accepted principles of democracy in 1960 this political equality question would have never arisen. It was incorprated into the constitution by the British under pressure from Turkey and as a "punishment" for the EOKA campaign. If this "political equality" forms part of a settlement, as it no doubt will, then there will always be a Cyprus Problem.

It will be interesting to see how many concessions Turkey will screw out of the EU before that country agrees to a solution, guaranteed membership perhaps?

Why do I get the feeling, that you see a solution only as a two separate states, as in two separate countries. If a settlement is not ONE Cyprus, than where is the settlement that everyone wants. If it's ONE Cyprus, then EU and others will be trading with whole of Cyprus and not just "North or South" Cyprus. If one benefits, we will all benefit, and if one loses, we will all lose.

Undemocratic rubbish should never be supported/promoted in this day and age. This was the very problem that made Makarios come up with his 13 points in order to balance the racist 1960 constitution.

Say NO to 1960's mistakes that ruined Cyprus.
